Chapter 23

2593 Words

Sixteen Tyler and Harry found Diller and McNalley on Main Street, supervising the building of the new police station and jail. A crew of local craftsmen was busy erecting one of the outside walls of the jail as they walked up. The foreman was shouting to his work crew as they, in unison, pulled the wall upward. The smell of the dusty street filled the air, and in the heat sweat streamed down the faces of Diller and McNalley. They were dressed in thick dark cotton work pants with white work shirts open at the collar. The men were pulling the wall upward using ropes attached to wooden pulleys to give them more leverage. There were two men on each rope, and at the foreman’s command, they pulled in unison. The wall of nailed two-by-fours moved upward with each heave until it stood upright.
