Victoria awoke, opening her eyes with a start. She’d seen the dark stranger in her dreams, the one with whom she had crossed paths twice yesterday. She didn’t know the man’s name yet. Who was he? Where did he come from?
She knew it was improper for an engaged woman to think about another man. She pushed the thoughts deeper inside her mind, trying to get comfortable. Her hair and body were sticky with perspiration. She threw back the bed covers in an attempt to cool down.
A frantic knocking on her door made her sit up, as a woman’s voice calling her name urged her to come to the door.
It took Victoria a moment to recognize the voice. Mrs. Morris. The landlady.
