CHAPTER TWELVE: THE VOWS OF WAR

1341 Words
The Romano tower buzzed like a hive of whispers and scandal. Screens in the lobby looped footage from the tabloids, photos of Emily in Adrian’s arms, headlines screaming: "FROM SECRETARY TO CEO’S BRIDE—LOVE OR LEVERAGE?" But Emily held her head high as she stepped through the revolving doors, each stiletto click a declaration: she would not be broken. Lydia met her by the elevator. “Are you sure about this?” she whispered. Emily glanced down at the press badge clipped to her lapel. Romano PR Liaison. “No,” she answered truthfully. “But I won’t let someone else tell my story.” The doors slid open, and she stepped in. Upstairs, Adrian stood at the window, the skyline behind him a blade of cold light. He turned the moment she entered. “You don’t have to do this, Emily.” “Yes, I do.” He studied her, crisp white blouse, navy pencil skirt, sleek bun. Her shoulders were squared, but he could see the battle beneath her calm. “They’ll twist your words.” “Then I’ll be careful with them,” she said. “Adrian, this isn’t just about protecting me. It’s about protecting us. Our story. Our truth.” He walked to her slowly and rested his hands on her waist. “You never stop surprising me.” “I learned from the best,” she whispered. Adrian smiled faintly, but his eyes still held fire. “If a single reporter crosses a line—” “I’ll handle it.” He exhaled. “Then let’s give them something they’ll never forget.” The Romano press conference was scheduled for noon. By ten, the lobby was filled with cameras, reporters, and flashing lights. Outside, protesters and supporters clashed with signs that read everything from “Love Wins” to “Expose the Corruption!” Inside, Adrian stood in the wings of the conference hall, watching as Emily approached the podium. She looked small at first, one woman against a media storm. But when she placed her hands on either side of the microphone and raised her chin, she was anything but small. “Good morning,” she began. Her voice was calm, clear, and deliberate. “My name is Emily Donald. Yes, I am engaged to Adrian Romano. Yes, I was once his secretary. And no—none of this was ever part of a plan.” Flashes went off. Reporters whispered. “I didn’t fall in love with a billionaire,” she said. “I fell in love with a man. A man who was complex, guarded, sometimes infuriating but kind. Generous. Loyal.” She paused. Let the silence stretch. “I’m not here to defend my relationship. Love doesn’t require permission. But I will defend my character. I worked for Mr. Romano for three years before our relationship ever became personal. I earned every promotion, every trust. And I’ll continue to work because I’m more than who I’m engaged to.” Adrian’s chest swelled with pride. “She may not be from our world,” Alessia had once sneered. But Adrian now saw what he hadn’t before: Emily didn’t need to belong to his world. She was redefining it. When the press conference ended, Emily stepped off the stage, heart racing. Adrian was already there, waiting behind the curtain. She fell into his arms without a word. “I’m proud of you,” he whispered into her hair. “So damn proud.” She pulled back. “Did I do the right thing?” “You did what I couldn’t,” he said. “You told the truth.” The aftermath was mixed. Some praised her courage. Others claimed the performance was rehearsed. A few high-profile women’s networks reached out for interviews, but Emily declined. “I said what needed to be said,” she told Lydia. “Now we work.” But trouble was already moving behind the scenes. That afternoon, Adrian’s legal team intercepted confidential documents leaked to a rival publication. Financial reports. Internal memos. Even private meeting transcripts. Someone inside the company was feeding information to the enemy. Adrian slammed his fist on the desk, rattling the crystal paperweight. “There’s a mole,” he growled. “And I’m done playing nice.” That night, Emily found Adrian in the study, surrounded by files, screens, and surveillance photos. His eyes were sharp. His tie discarded. He looked like a man preparing for war. “Let me help,” she said, stepping beside him. He looked up. “This is dangerous.” “I’ve been in danger since the moment I said yes to you. I’m not going anywhere.” He exhaled. “There’s a leak from inside. One of the senior aides. I don’t know who yet.” Emily scanned the documents. Something caught her eye. A meeting note signed with the initials “R.T.” “Rosa Turner?” she said aloud. Adrian narrowed his eyes. “My father’s old secretary. She was transferred to finance last year.” “She’s close to Alessia.” Adrian picked up the phone. “Thomas. Pull Rosa Turner’s digital footprint. Everything from the last six months.” By midnight, Thomas had the report. Rosa had received encrypted payments from a shell company linked to the Santorini Group,Adrian’s most ruthless competitors. And it was Rosa who had leaked the engagement photo. “She’s been feeding them for months,” Thomas confirmed. Adrian didn’t speak. His silence was colder than rage. Emily sat beside him, placing a hand over his clenched fist. “Fire her,” she said. “Legally. Publicly. Don’t let her drag your name into a war of shadows.” “I’m not worried about my name,” he said, voice low. “I’m worried about yours.” Emily’s eyes softened. “Then let’s clear both. Together.” The next day, Rosa was summoned to the executive floor. Adrian didn’t speak at first. He just handed her the evidence. Payment logs. IP traces. Leaked files. Rosa paled. “You were loyal to my father,” Adrian said. “You watched me grow up. You knew how much this company meant to me. And still, you sold us out.” Rosa’s eyes filled with tears. “I needed the money. I was promised a new start.” “And what about the woman you tried to destroy?” Adrian asked, glancing at Emily. “What did she do to deserve being hunted like prey?” Rosa couldn’t answer. “You’re fired,” Adrian said. “Your clearance is revoked. You’ll be escorted out.” He stood. “If I ever hear your name connected to this company again, I’ll see to it you never work in this industry again.” Rosa sobbed quietly as security arrived. Emily turned away not out of weakness, but out of mercy. That evening, Adrian and Emily stood on the rooftop, watching the city light up like a firework frozen in time. “You didn’t have to be so harsh,” she said quietly. “I wasn’t harsh,” he replied. “I was measured.” “You used to protect me by pushing me away,” she said, turning to him. “But now... I see you trust me. Let me stand beside you.” He looked down at her. “You’ve never stood behind me. You’ve always stood beside me even when I didn’t deserve it.” She slipped her arms around his waist. “Then let this be our vow.” “What vow?” She looked up at him. “That no matter what happens next, we fight for each other. Not out of fear. Not out of obligation. But out of love.” Adrian stared at her, something raw breaking open behind his eyes. Then he pulled her close and kissed her with the intensity of every vow left unspoken. The war wasn’t over. But neither were they. And in Adrian Romano’s world, love wasn’t weakness. It was the weapon no enemy could touch.
