As I begin cutting my pancakes with my knife and fork Giovanni enters the dining room. “Buongiorno fratello (Good morning brother).” He said sitting down at the table to my left shirtless with just joggers on. “Buongiorno fratello. I said back. “Why aren’t you dressed Giovanni, you know we’re leaving in less than an hour?” I ask a little annoyed wiping my mouth with my napkin. “ Fratello (brother) relax it’s only 6:30am. I’ll be ready and on time, I always am.” He states while filling his plate. “Where’s Jacob?” I questioned getting really annoyed. I liked being early or on time. Which was hard with these two every morning. “Dormire (Sleep).” He shrugs his shoulders while stuffing food in his mouth. He has no table manners what so ever when it’s comes to eating. I shake my head as I turn my attention back to Giovanni. I swear that boy came out eat anyone I know. He’s tall about 6’1 and about 180 pounds. He’s pure Italian with black hair and blue eyes. He’s the goofball of the group, the one I have to keep in line about his behavior. But he’s only twenty one so I do give him a little leeway.
He ran away from home at eleven and never looked back. His father was a drunk who use to beat on him for no reason at all and his step mother was too high to give a damn or do anything about it. So the first chance he got he got the hell up out of there. The first time we met was at a park, I was about eleven or so. I was out doing a surveillance job for Enzo. He walked right up to me and said “The fat guy you’re looking for is in the white pick up truck today not the black SUV.” I look at him stunned, what does a small boy know what I was doing here or who I was looking for? “How do you know that?” I crook my eyebrow. “Because you come here every Tuesday and so does he.” He smiles up at me. “Im very observant.” And ever since then we’ve been best friends. I had his back and he’s had mines. There’s nothing that we wouldn’t do for each other. I trust him with my whole life. Jacob too, you see we’re more than a mafia we’re a family. They are my brothers.
A few minutes later the double doors open and Jacob walks in. “Boun- frat. Boun-fr. He struggles. “To hell that good morning brothers.” He finally says. “Boungiorno fratello (Good morning brother).” Gio slowly enunciates, making fun of Jake Italian speaking struggle. I chuckled as well. “Glad two of us is ready to go.” I stare hard at Gio as Jake sits down stacking his plate before eating. He has on a cotton navy blue three piece suits. He’s black, he has jet black hair about 130 and six foot even. He has lazy brown eyes. He join my crew about a year after Giovanni. His parents just got home and Jacob went out to meet them on the front porch. Little did he know so was a complete stranger desperate for a quick buck. Before they could get in the house they both were shot and robbed for one hundred dollars. Police came, investigated and placed him with CPS and never looked back. Every group home they put him in was worse than the one before so eventually he gave up. He packed a bag and disappeared into the night. Gio and I found him going through the dumpsters at a near by park looking for his next meal. We gave him all the money we had in our pockets and the shirt and jacket off our backs. The next week we saw him again and he had all the money we gave him giving it back to give to us. We brought him to Enzo and with his approval Jacob was one of us.
“Gio come on man that’s enough go get ready, we’re going to be late because of you.” I demanded. Looking defeated he gets up and heads for his room. But not before take one last bite of the pancakes. I shake my head as I watch him or stuff his mouth and run up stairs and out of site like a child. Tracey another one of my maid comes quickly to clean up his mess “Good morning sir.” She says doing her best to flirt and be seen. She sticks out her chest through her apron and bats her eyes. But I don’t respond. There’s only two house maids I respect and respond to and that’s Claire and Bernice. Claire is an older African American lady. She’s about sixty-five but she reminds me so much of mama Rose. Since been here she’s taken care of me. She plays the role of a grandmother to me. Claire loves me and treats me as she would treat her own. She shows me genuine love and affection. And I reciprocate the same, I make sure she needs for nothing and no one gives her any problems. That’s why I made her head maid, to insure everyone respects her.
“Good morning Claire.” I smile as I finish the last on my plate placing my napkin on top if my plate. “Good morning Mr. Parker, Mr. Smith.” She cheers “Morning.” He mumbles through his food. I get up from the table and Jake follows suit drinking the last of his coffee and we head for the front door. I go to the end of the stairs and call for Gio. “Giovanni Santos I swear to God you have one minute to get down here or I’m putting you on basement duty for the rest of the week.” He comes flying down the stairs, knowing how serious I am. He has on black jeans with a black crewneck t-shirt and a black leather jacket. Seriously sometimes I feel like I’m his father more than his boss. Jake laughs whole heartedly as I chuckle softly and shake my shake my head. “So what’s on the schedule today boss?” Jake ask as we walk out the house and get into the SUV Jake drives and Gio gets in the passenger seat and I get in the back. “Inventory.” Was all I said as I put my shade on and lean my head back knowing today is going to be a long day. Knowing what I mean Jake takes off in the direction of one of the first warehouses that we have to go to.
