"Not so fast, Miss Green. I believe you have a punishment to serve." Mr. Demetrius said, when I was trying to squeeze out of the crowd, without coming into his eyesight. But it was my luck, he stopped me before I could have even executed my plan.
"I'm really sorry, Mr. Demetrius, but I have a job to attend......"
"And a detention to serve, I believe. If you have a job to go to, you need to be more responsible about your studies and the rules. Follow me into my cabin, Miss Green." He said, making me purse my lips as I followed him. This man is so freaking heartless. Just like his damn oceanic eyes.
He opened the door to his cabin. Much to my amazement, he was not just a teacher in this college, but also in-charge of Chemistry. No wonder he has his own cabin. Shaking my head, I walked in, and he turned the lights and fan on in his cabin. His cabin was of a moderate size. He took his seat on the teacher's chair and asked me to take one of the two chairs available in his cabin.
"You are going to be here for the next hour, Miss Green. I'd suggest you get your notebook out, and start doing a few exercises I'd be giving you until I mark the test you attempted today." He said, making me look up at him. I wanted to say a lot of things to him. Starting with how he can f**k off and let me earn my money. But instead, I kept my mouth shut and removed my notebook.
"I need a textbook for that, Mr. Demetrius." I said when he handed me a bunch of sheets to solve. Some of them were theoretical questions, while others were numerical. As much as I was okay in my studies, it's been two years since I had actually studied for writing an examination.
"I need your Chemistry textbook on the desk tomorrow, else you can expect yourself outside the classroom and in the detention room after the school hours. Okay?" He asked me, his voice low, threatening, and it sent chills down my spine. He doesn't scare me. He can't scare me. You are stronger now, Valeria. No-one can hurt you.
"And what if I don't come to your class until I get my textbook?" I couldn't hold my tongue as I asked him the question that was irking me. His jaw clenched as he gripped the edges of his table and leaned towards me, making me swallow as his oceanic eyes gazed into my eyes. In ways that made me feel intimidated by him. He was intimidating me. And he was becoming successful to some extent.
"I dare you, Miss Green. I dare you to deliberately skip my classes. Do not forget, you'll have to face me at the end of the day. Because I am not just your Chemistry teacher, but also your mentor. You will have to face me in one way or the other. And if you intentionally try to defy me, you will find yourself in a deeper ditch than you already are. Am I clear to you, Miss Green?" I gulped at his promise, making me lick my lips as I quickly gazed down at my papers, shaking my head.
"Am I clear to you, Miss Green? Don't make me repeat myself." He gritted out, his jaw clenched. His chiseled face made my mouth go dry. How can someone so heartless be so heartthrobbing? How can someone so beautiful be so bitter?
"You are, Sir." I answered him.
"Better. And when you come tomorrow, make sure you remove all these rings from your hand and that lip-peircing as well." He said, making me look up, my eyes wide as I stared at him with my fingers curled into a fist. Why does he have a problem with everything I do?
"Why? Last time I remembered, the college had no such rules except for expensive ornaments. And these are cheap." I argued, and he raised his eyebrows at me, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked down at me.
"It looks cheap as well, Miss Green. I don't care what it says, I shouldn't see any of these things on you tomorrow. Get back to work." He said in his stern voice, making me purse my lips as I started writing answers in my notebook. I was rolling my lip-ring using my tongue, going through my questions. Holy s**t, did the portion change? I thought, shaking my head as I started writing.
"You know, Mr. Demetrius, it's just how you see the world. The mine looks dirty to people who don't work there, but that very mine has diamonds embedded in its very core. My ornaments might seem cheap to you, but it defines who I am," I said, not looking up from my notebook. I knew he would only glare at me. He loves glaring at me since I walked in his classroom.
"Pass me the phone number of your parents, Miss Green. I don't tolerate the tone you are using with me." He said, making me snort, as I looked up at him, smiling in amusement as I leaned further to look into his eyes. Where are we? In school?
"You wish to talk to my parents, Mr. Demetrius?" I asked him, and his steely oceanic eyes turned dangerous as he glared at me, not speaking a word until a whole minute.
"Yes," “**”
"Too bad, I don't have the contact number of heaven or hell up there." I said, with a sweet smile. And this was the first time someone looked at me blankly, instead of sympathy, when I mentioned that my parents were no longer alive. I loved him for that. Just for that.
"Your guardian then?" This man doesn't like giving up, I thought, with a smile.
"The guardian is sitting right in front of you." I replied smartly, and he narrowed his eyes at me.
"Excuse me?"
"I am my own guardian. Tell me what you wish to complain about, Mr. Demetrius?" I asked him, my eyes shining with amusement and his jaw clenched in raw anger and disapproval.
"Get back to solving those questions, Miss Green. You are not leaving the classroom until you submit to me the answers." He said, making me look at him in horror.
"You have given me a three-page long question paper, Mr. Demetrius. It would take me more than two days to complete this. You can't expect me to complete this in an hour."
"Forty-five minutes, Miss Green, not an hour." f**k you!
Without voicing my pretty words, I got back to work, aggressively writing the answers. I had never studied as much as he made me study in that one hour."
"Write in readable handwriting, Miss Green. Else, you will have to redo the work I won't be able to understand." He warned me, and my eyes clenched shut as I felt weakness surfacing my body. I was hungry. I had barely eaten anything since morning. Next time I will have breakfast before leaving. But how could I have eaten when I was so freaking nervous about attending the school I was forced to leave two years back?
"Miss Green,"
"Hm?"
"Miss Green!" His voice turned sharper, making me close my eyes, as I raised my face to look into his eyes. I ran my fingers through my short hair, making his eyes follow my actions. "Words. I can't hear....."
"You can hear humming, Mr. Demetrius. Besides, I was busy doing the work you assigned me." I said tiredly, softly. I barely had energy left to fight with him.
"I have graded your test." He said quietly, making me bite my lips as I waited for him to tell me he was right about how I shouldn't have attempted the test before studying for it. I was ready for a lot of cruel remarks but he said nothing to me.
"B grade. It's quite impressive for someone who resumed their studies after two years of break." He said, making me freeze. My fingers stopped scribbling the answers as I looked up at him. My teeth tugging on my lip-ring and I saw his eyes moving down, gulping as he quickly looked away from me.
"Tha.... thank you, Mr. Demetrius." I mumbled under my breath, and he kept quiet, looking at me with a strange look on his face.
"Why did you take two years of break, Miss Green? You would have completed your college if you continued your studies. And seeing your performance in the test, you would have passed your semester examination if you attended your examination." He said, making me press my lips.
"Personal reasons, Sir." I said, making him look at me with his oceanic eyes turning dark. So, dearest Sir was angry.
"The time is up, Miss Green. How many questions did you answer in your notebook?" He asked me, and I let out a sigh, as my hands ached from writing so fast. I turned the pages around.
"One and half pages of question-paper and around nine pages of my notebook. One and a half pages of the question paper are still remaining, Mr. Demetrius." I answered him, and he shook his head, removing more papers from the bundle to grade. I was the first student he graded.
"You will only leave this premises once you are done writing all the answers, Miss Green." He said, making me purse my lips as I glared at him.
"I have work to attend to, Mr. Demetrius. I am already an hour late. And it will take me another twenty minutes to reach there." I said, pleading to him this time, and he shook his head, barely looking at me as he was checking the tests of the other students. How can a teacher so young be so strict with the students? Miss Dave was so much better than him. She was so understanding, unlike him.
"If punishments were so easy to serve, Miss Green, they wouldn't have been termed as punishments. And when you lose something, that's when you value the other things. I am not sorry for making you miss your working hours, Miss Green. Complete your work now. The sooner you submit your work, the sooner you can leave for your work. I am not enjoying your infuriating company either." He said, making me burn in my own flames of anger. How dare he?
"Then let me leave. You won't have to sit in my presence, Sir." I said with an angry look in my eyes and he shook his head, reading the answer on the sheet before striking it out. Poor student.
"Sit your rear back down, Miss Green!"
"I don't get paid for the hours I don't work, Mr. Demetrius!" I said, slapping my palms on his table in desperation as I looked at him for mercy. I need money! Why can't he understand that? When he looked up at me, I looked at him with my pleading gaze.
"Please, Mr. Demetrius. You said punishments are meant to be painful, right? I'll complete my work and hand it to you first thing in the morning tomorrow. I'll stay awake all night. But I need to reach work. Because now I am only losing my salary for two hours, if I get late, I'd lose this job as well. And I really need this job. Please, Mr. Demetrius." I said, and something shifted in his eyes as he let out a sigh before nodding his head, waving his hand, dismissing me.
"Remember everything I told you today. I want the work done, the Chemistry textbook on the tables and these rings off you. Am I clear, Miss Green?" He asked me, and I smiled bitterly at him.
"Very clearly, Sir."
