“That’s okay”, he grunts through gritted teeth. Rafe’s eyes are on me, watching me closely. He is in pain and he cringes with my every move but he says nothing as he regards my pathetic wriggles up his body, as I slowly make progress. If we were on the ground I would be mortified by my position on him and now wriggling there, but for now I ignore any thoughts like that and keep on with my climbing. I’m so afraid of the fall and of hurting him that my clumsy arms and legs take forever to bring me up. Once my face is next to his again, I can see large beads of sweat covering his face and rolling down his temples. Only his two left wings are moving the air behind his back. “How do you feel? How are your wings?” I wonder how long he will be able to hold us mid-air with his injured wings.
