Chapter 24 JESSE The rain falls to a quick beat, just as hard as my heart. Heading down the elevator in Heath’s building with Marilyn’s hand in mine, I raise my other five fingers, frantic as I try to wave down a taxi. But the cabs keep passing. Wheels slush past the sidewalk on which we stand, and the downpour drenches us both, soaking through our clothes. I hug Marilyn close. “Subway ride?” I glance down at her. “You do know that this is the most I’ve ridden that damned thing in ten years, don’t you?” I smile. “Of course I do, Duchess. Watch your step, though. Wouldn’t want to get your royal robes dirty.” She flips me the middle finger, her face scrunching. Kissing her forehead, I throw my arms around her shoulder, crossing the street. Rainwater swishes at our feet. Horns honk.
