There was something deeper going on in this private garden than what the Huntsman was telling Ruby. She felt the deep care and tenderness that went into every detail here.
She felt the tug to help ease whatever was weighing on the Huntsman. Ruby could almost hear Gran scoffing at that. There is no room for a young girl’s fancy during a war, she’d say.
Gran had been a young girl during the Wild Wars. Had she ever felt torn between duty and compassion?
Ruby sighed. Gran was right. There wasn’t a lot of time to spend on whatever the Huntsman was going through. Lives were at stake, and it was up to her to figure out how to free the wolfkin.
There was an opportunity here. She needed to think about how to convince the Huntsman to give her the freedom to do her part of the mission
