Chapter 6 Ruby woke up with so many aches and pains that she groaned even before knowing if it was safe to make a sound. Her eyes flew open as soon as she realized that she’d made noise in a dangerous place. What she saw didn’t feel dangerous at all. That by itself was suspicious. Sunlight hurt her eyes, and she had to shut them again as soon as she opened them. She was left with a black-and-white impression of a barn with the doors wide open and letting the sun stream through. She thought she saw cows and sheep—some chickens, maybe. She opened her eyes slowly this time, letting her long lashes filter the light until her eyes adjusted. She really was in a barn that was drenched with sunlight.
