“Rylee, we’re here! What happened?”
Lanie’s voice broke the heavy silence the moment the Golden Moon pack crested the ridge. Though the SOS had been broadcast to Golden Moon, Desert Moon, Olivia, and Svetlana alike, Lanie’s group had been the first to bridge the distance.
“Aurora... she’s gone,” Rylee whispered. Her voice was thin, choked by the tears she could no longer hold back.
As Lanie pulled her sister into a fierce embrace, Lexie approached as quickly as her heavy stride would allow. She was only weeks away from her due date, her movements awkward but determined.
“Lexie, slow down! You shouldn't be running!” Brent’s warning shouted from behind her, but Lexie didn't so much as glance back. Her focus was locked on Rylee.
