‘Jen,’ she said, softly. ‘I think we need to get to a town. There’s something … something I want to check on.’ The closest town was only three miles away. They parked up in the centre, and got out. ‘I don’t understand,’ Jen said, eyes growing wide, and wild. ‘I don’t get it. Where the f**k is everyone?’ Red had no answers for her. They started with the shops, going into each one in turn and hoping, with an intensely mounting sense of anxiety, that they might find someone hiding behind a counter, or in a changing room, or even in a toilet. As they searched, the enormity of what they were experiencing began to dawn on them, and Jen started to cry, quietly at first, and then with more urgency.
