Shackles of Power
The announcement thundered through the palace like a death knell:
Emergency declared. The royal estates seized. Princess Gitanjali Devi to be taken into custody.
Soldiers stormed into the palace halls, boots striking against the marble. Servants cried out, women wept, guards tried to resist but were quickly disarmed.
And at the front of it all—Seher Rathore.
He looked every inch the government’s weapon now—uniform perfect, revolver at his side, eyes sharp with authority. No trace of the playboy from the city, no hint of weakness.
“Aaliya!” Gitanjali’s voice cracked as she grabbed her sister’s wrist. “Stay behind me.”
Seher’s gaze slid to them, and for a heartbeat, the hall fell silent. His soldiers were shouting orders, shoving aside furniture, but his eyes only drank her in.
He turned to Gitanjali. “By orders of the state, you are under arrest for conspiracy and hoarding illegal treasure.”
Chains were brought. Aaliya gasped, stepping forward. “No! She has done nothing wrong!”
Seher’s jaw tightened. Hearing her voice—soft, trembling, furious—was like being struck in the chest. He wanted to silence her, to touch her, to own her. But in front of everyone, he had to stay the officer.
Gitanjali squeezed Aaliya’s hand. “Don’t speak, chhoti. They feed on our words.”
But Aaliya tore free, her eyes blazing as she looked straight at Seher.
“Is this what your duty is? To chain queens? To dishonor women in their own home?”
The soldiers shifted, shocked by her boldness.
Seher smirked, though his heart pounded with something dangerously close to desire. He took a slow step toward her, lowering his voice so only she could hear.
“Careful, Princess… I might enjoy chaining you more.”
Aaliya’s breath caught. A flush rose to her cheeks, fury and something unnameable mingling inside her. She opened her mouth to retort, but Gitanjali pulled her back sharply.
Seher’s soldiers dragged chains over Gitanjali’s wrists. The proud princess did not flinch, her eyes locked on her captor.
“This will not last, Rathore. The sands of Rajasthan do not bow forever.”
Seher ignored her. His eyes returned to Aaliya.
For the briefest moment, he let the mask of the officer slip. His gaze was not duty—it was possession. His voice was low, almost tender, as he murmured:
“Remember this night, Princess. The world might bind your sister… but you? You already belong to me.”
Before Aaliya could reply, Gitanjali was dragged away, chains rattling. The great palace doors slammed shut behind them, and silence returned like a curse.
Aaliya stood trembling, her heart pounding. She hated him. She feared him.
And yet, deep inside, she knew the truth—she would never escape him now.
