Chapter 4: A new admirer

Genny “Are you not going to dance?”

“Dance with these boys? No not at all. I am not interested.” Patty

“What? But why?” Genny asked

“Take a look on them. They are stupid. No no they are not just stupid they have the most malicious and vilifying mind in this world. Only Catherine can match up with them.” Patty

Then they both started laughing. Genny “Then what are we going to do?”

“Genny doesn’t you have a vintage grand piano in your castle. I want to play that piano” Patty

“Well you need a little correction. This is neither my castle nor the grand piano is mine. All these belong to my grandmother. You need to take her permission” Genny replied

“So, let’s find your grandmother.” With saying this Patty and Genny started looking for Sicilia.

In middle of the ballroom servants were preparing a table in which the birthday cake was going to be placed. Almost at the back end of the ballroom Sicilia was sitting with some ladies. They were chatting and laughing. With a bit of hesitation Genny approached Sicilia.

“Grand mom someone wants to meet you”. With that note Patty came forward, she was standing behind Genny while waiting for her cue. Sicilia eyed both of them. She immediately stood up after noticing Patty.

“Grand mom this is Patricia Williams. Patty this is my grandmother Sicilia Winget.” Genny introduced them to each other.

“Nice to meet you. You are the sister of Lord Charles Williams.” Sicilia

“Yes, Lord Charles Williams is my brother.” Patty replied with disgust.

“Is there any difference?” Sicilia. “I think, a little” Patty

Well everyone in this peerage knows that this youngest child of Williams’ is a rebel. It is also said that she is feminist. So, there is no point to argue with her in this matter. And the last thing Sicilia wanted was to break an argument with Lord Charles William’s sister.

Before the situation got worse Genny interrupted “Grand mom Patty wants to play the grand piano so we came to take your permission.”

“Really? You can play piano. That’s great. I wish Catherine could also play piano but she is so impatient.” Sicilia

“By the way is it true that Lord Williams is coming back to the country?” Sicilia asked

“Yes, he might be coming within a month" Patty replied.

“Oh, that's great.  We are eagerly waiting for his arrival.” Sicilia exclaimed

“That's so nice of you" Patty

While all these conversations were going on Genny was standing with a passive face. Both Patty and Sicilia noticed that.

“Well just a minute” Sicilia told them. Then she went forward facing the guests. She clapped her hand and announced

“Attention please ladies and gentlemen, I have some very important announcement. We have Miss Patricia Williams with us. She plays piano very well. So, I requested her to play a piece for us. She will play after the cake cutting ceremony. Please give her a big hand.”  

All the people started clapping. Then Patty approached Sicilia “Umm… Madam Genny is also going to play a piece. I would like you to announce her name also.”

Genny “Patty please ..stop …. no. I can’t. How can I….”

Sicilia asked Patty while eyeing Genny “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I am” Patty replied with a confident.

“Very well then". “Well everyone Genelia is also going to play a piano piece. Please give her a big hand.” Sicilia addressed the guests. All of them started clapping.

By this time a big birthday cake had been placed in the middle of the ballroom. So, Sicilia requested all to gather around the table. Whole Winget family gathered close to the table.  In the table a four-tier white cake with various fruit decoration was resting.

 When Cath came to cut the cake all the people started singing “Happy birthday” song. Genny and Patty were standing together silently. She offered the 1st bite to Sicilia, then to her parents, after that Sicilia instructed the servants to serve the cake to all guests.

Cath and her friends started opening the gifts because they were so curious. They found some expensive gifts and Cath was very happy. One of Cath’s friends June took a small packet from the bunch then showed it to Cath. She opened the gift wrap and then her face enlightened with an evil smile and she started walking towards the direction where Genny and Patty were standing.

In that time Genny and Patty were eating the birthday cake while chatting. “I can’t imagine Genny you gifted me an old second hand book. I am sure you are not that poor and you can afford a more decent gift than that.” With that note she handed over the book to Genny.

With this sudden development Genny was a bit surprised and before she reacted Patty took that book from her. After a short examination she started laughing.

“Genny this time Cath is right you don’t know to choose a perfect gift for a person” Patty said.

Cath was a bit surprised and then she told Genny “See this time even Patricia is agreeing with me.”

Patty “Of course I have to. Nobody in their right mind will ever think to gift this to you Catherine. Do you know how precious this book is? Of course you don’t. This belongs to the 1st edition of the “Frankenstein” novel written by Mary Shelley and it contains Mary Shelley’s signature with a note to the book owner. It’s an antic book. But as you don’t read you are not able to evaluate the value. I don’t know after knowing you so well how Genny could gift this book to you and not me. Genny I am really hurt.”

“Patty I have something very special for your 22nd birthday. I can promise you that you’ll be delighted” Genny

“Catherine as it is clear that you don’t like this book would you mind if I take it?” Patty asked

“Okay” Cath replied with a hesitation. If she ever knew this book is so expensive, she would never make a fuss about it and moreover she could sell this to a curio shop but now she missed the chance.

Patty was so happy. She asked Genny “How did you get this?” Genny replied her with a smile “You’re forgetting something important. My grandpa has a book publishing house.” 

“That’s amazing. Now let’s play the piano. I am dying to play that vintage grand piano” with that note Patty almost dragged Genny towards the piano and made her sit. She also sat beside her and started playing piano. Gradually Genny also started playing with her. Guest started enjoying and some of them started dancing with their partners.

 At first Genny was a bit hesitant but after she started playing and concentrating on her playing, she forgot about everything around her.

Patty was observing members of the Winget family mostly Sicilia. Sicilia was watching her from distance and after they made eye contact, she gave Patty an appreciating nod and so did Cynthia who was standing beside Sicilia.

At this time Patty silently stood up from her stool and moved away from the piano with a sarcastic smile on her face.

In an instant Sicilia’s expression changed into an awkward one. Cynthia was stunned. Cath and Amy’s reaction changed into an angry one. Ralph and Rodney were at first a bit surprised but then they became so happy.

And for Patra she was indeed very surprised but she was also very happy. She never knew that Genny could play piano so well.

Genny was always very shy and uncomfortable in any party, but now when she was playing piano she was so devoted to playing that she forgot about her surroundings and she was a bit of herself. She had a satisfactory smile on her face which was making her very cute and girlish.

So, Patra was very happy with all these. She gave Cynthia a proud smile, because it was obvious that Genny was playing the piano not Patty.

When Genny finished playing guests started applauding. Then Genny came back to her senses and she noticed that Patty was standing behind her and smiling. Genny awkwardly stood up and bowed slightly and stepped back. She went towards Patty.

“That was quite impressive I must say” Patty told Genny. “When did you left? That’s not done.” Genny.

 “Well, never mind that. See, everyone here is appreciating you” Patty. “I’ll get some orange juice. Do you want?”Genny. “No, Thanks” Patty

Genny went to get some juice to the bar counter. After having a glass of juice when she turned around, she bumped into somebody.

“I’m sorry I didn’t see you.” Genny

“It’ Okay. That’s entirely my fault.” The man replied.

When Genny took a look, she found that the man standing in front of her is in his mid-twenty. He is tall very fair and handsome man with blond hair and green eyes.

Genny said another sorry was about to leave then the man interacted “Hello, I am Victor Dashwood. You play piano very well.  And you are very beautiful”

“Hi, thank you. I am Genelia Winget. It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Dashwood.” replied Genny with a bit of awkwardness.

“Pleasure is all mine” Victor replied.

“Please excuse me. My friend is waiting for me.” Genny

“Okay, Bye then” Victor.

After Genny left Victor was looking at her departing back and said in his mind “this girl is really very different from others.”
