Chapter 5: A shadow of past

When Genny went to Patty she enquired “Whom you’re talking to? Do you know that guy?”

Genny replied “No I don’t. After I had my drink and turned to come back, I just bumped into that guy, do you know him?”

“Every girl in our society knows him except you.” Patty told her. “Oh, is he so famous?” Genny enquired.

“Yes. He is famous but in notorious way. He is a reputed womanizer.” Patty

“Then what is he doing here? Who invited him?” Genny.

“He is Victor Dashwood. He is the present Baron of Bourn, Cambridgeshire. Do you remember Sir Louis Dashwood?” Patty asked Genny.

Genny nodded negatively.

So, Patty continued “Sir Louis Dashwood had a daughter named Cassandra. She got married to an ordinary man against her father’s will. So, her father disowned her. But Sir Dashwood had no other heir and Cassandra had a son. She is dead now. So, Sir Louis had grown some tenderness for his only grandson. Almost a year ago he took Victor as his heir and gave him his surname. So, he is the present baron as Sir Dashwood stepped down from his position because of his old age. In this one-year Victor had been with so many women that the peerage is not happy about his reputation, but we cannot ignore him. May be that’s why he is invited. And now he is eyeing you with great interest. Genny be careful.”

Genny frowned and said “good for him. He is just wasting his time. Let’s go Patty it’s time for dinner and I am very hungry.”

With that note they went to the dining hall where a buffet dinner was served and plenty of tables were arranged for people to sit and eat.

As they entered the dining hall they spotted Lord and Lady Williams were surrounded by a group of people and most of them were parents of a daughter. They were trying to impress Lord and Lady. Lord and Lady were a bit annoyed. Soon Cynthia and Cleopatra came to rescue them. That group leaved them with a disappointed look. But Lord and Lady were then persuaded by Cynthia and Cleopatra.

Watching this situation Patty broke into laughter. But Genny was standing there in silence with an embarrassing expression. Patty noticed that and she stopped laughing immediately. She told Genny “I was laughing because it’s reminds me about Pride and Prejudice. I was not laughing on your mom. I am sorry if I hurt you unknowingly.”

“It’s okay Patty. I was upset because it’s a bit embarrassing.” Patty replied to Genny “It’s okay we’re accustomed to this.”

Patty continued “I was just wondering if your mother is Mrs. Bennet then Amy must be Lydia. Then who are you?”

Genny “I must be Mary. Even we have piano in common.”

Patty “Oh! Certainly not. You play piano very well, just like Lizzie and your care for your family just like Jane. And you already have Mr. Darcy in your life” and she winked to Genny.

Genny frowned and told Patty “You must be very hungry that’s why you’re talking rubbish. Let’s grab some food I am also starving”

Genny and Patty took their food and went to look for less crowded table. They found one in the corner. It was four seater but thankfully no one was there. So, they sat there to finish their meal. They were eating and chatting and having a great time together.

Suddenly someone called Genny “Hey Genelia would you mind if I sit here?”

But before Genny realized who was calling her and she gave an answer that person already grabbed a chair and sat there. And to her surprise that’s none other than Victor Dashwood.

Patty got very angry and she asked Victor “What are you doing here? Did we agree to you? Then why did you sit here? Can’t you find any other place to sit?”

Victor “Hey, you seemed be very angry.” Then he turned towards Genny and told her “ your friend seems to be very angry. By the way who’s is she?”

But before Genny gave any reply Patty refuted “That’s none of your business. Just leave.”

Victor “Hey, Genelia I am your guest. You can’t behave like that. Don’t you think so? Would you mind if I sit here?”

“I guess no. Please have a sit” Genny replied.

“Why don’t you introduce me to your friend?” Victor asked Genny.

 Genny cordially introduced them to each other “This is Patricia Williams and this is Victor Dashwood.”

Victor “Oh my God you’re The Patricia Williams. Well nice to meet you”. But Patty didn’t greeted him ,instead she rolled her eyes towards Genny. And Genny pleaded Patty with her eyes to remain calm and Patty agreed. 

“Well Genelia it seems that your friend doesn’t like me” Victor told Genny.

But before Genny replied him Patty replied “Yes , of course I don’t like you because I don’t like playboys like you, who thinks woman is a commodity.”

“You know many things about me. But it’s not my fault that women are after me. It’s also not my fault that they found me attracting. It’s them who are after me not me.” Victor replied with a smirk.

Patty hissed “There are people who are more handsome and attractive than you are”

“Of course, there are but let me tell you a secret these women found that attractive man a bit cold, arrogant and unapproachable and that’s why they’re after me. They found me charming and amiable” with that Victor winked towards Patty.

Genny could see that Patty was fuming “How dare you insulted my brother?”

“I never mentioned your brother. You did” Victor replied with a victorious smile.

“Don’t try to act smart. Don’t try to flirt my brother will make you pay for that” Patty warned Victor.

Then Victor turned towards Genny who was silently watching them. “Genelia whom you prefer between us? Don’t you find me more charming and warm person?” He enquired eagerly

Genny calmly replied “What if I am not interested in any one of you? Mr. Dashwood I would appreciate if you address me as Miss. Winget. I would appreciate your cordial behaviour as a guest and please don’t forget that Miss. Williams is also my guest. So, please behave yourself. Please enjoy your dinner.”

“You know the more I know you the more I am surprised. You are very interesting person. I would like to know better.” Victor told Genny

“I am sorry but I think I am not interested in any further communication with you” Genny replied with a disgust.

Patty refuted “Didn’t I told you just now that don’t try to flirt with us otherwise my brother will make you pay ?”

“But I am not talking to you I am talking to Genelia. Your brother should not bother about that. Is Genelia related to your brother?” Victor asked Patty with a confused look. 

When he looked at Genny he saw that her face was white and she bore an strange expression.

"Mr. Dashwood can we just finish our dinner?" Genny asked.

Victor nodded.

Patty was eyeing Genny. 

They finished remaining dinner silently. Then they greeted each other and left the dinning hall.
