Chapter 17

Nick gulped, letting go of Kate and moving back away from her. With his eyes closed, he desperately tried to regain control of his own body, taking deep breaths to calm himself. He heard some grunting and he opened his eyes to see Kate with her fists clenched, probably fighting against Fatim just as he was against Adira. Dumb animals. “Nick uhh… went to his place to take a shower!” Kate called, giving Nick a warning look and placing her index finger over her lips. “Just go outside and play, I’ll be right there.” “Alright!” Zoe chuckled and quiet footsteps headed out of the apartment. Once Kate heard the door close, she growled and reached for one of the dirty T-shirts that were lying around, using it to wipe the c*m dripping down her thighs. Nick tucked his d**k back into his pants, watching her nervously, not sure what to say. He should probably apologize, right? Before he could open his mouth, Kate's eyes pierced him. “Not now,” she said firmly and started to dress herself. “We’ll talk after Zoe goes to bed. You think you can manage to pretend that… this didn’t happen until then?” “Sure.” Nick nodded even though he wasn’t really certain he could do that. Or that he even wanted to. All he wished right now was to hug her, to sort out this mess, to fix the sudden tension between them. To kiss her, because even though they just f****d like wild animals, he didn’t get a chance to taste her lips. To make sure she was alright. “Kate? I didn’t, umm… hurt you, did I?” Her expression softened and she smirked at him. “Me? I’m not the one covered in blood, Nick. Go get cleaned up, don’t let Zoe see you like this. We’ll talk later.” Covered in blood? Only now Nick looked down at his chest to see that the top of his T-shirt was indeed dotted with red stains, no doubt his neck was covered by a layer of dried blood as well. Fatim certainly wasn’t messing around. “Neither was I,” Adira growled in his mind. Nick had to roll his eyes, carefully peeking into the hallway to confirm it was empty before heading to his apartment. “Yea, and it worked out splendidly. Can’t you two just play along nicely?” “Like I have a choice,” the wolf sighed. “I really don’t understand why the Moon Goddess is punishing me like this.” The wounds on his neck were already healed but the blood didn’t magically disappear, making Nick look like someone was trying to slit his throat. He quickly undressed and stepped into the shower. “What are you talking about? And stop being so damn cryptic!” “I wasn’t being cryptic, i***t, I was giving you a chance to figure this out on your own. Aren’t you supposed to be the smart one around here?” When the water running down his body finally stopped being pink, Nick reached for the soap. “Figure out what exactly!?” He was getting seriously annoyed. “Nicolas, open your eyes. If Kate was a wolf, what would you say it all meant? Her irresistible scent, the undeniable attraction between you two, the damn sparks whenever you touch her?” Adira sounded as if she was patiently explaining to a child that the snow really does turn into water when it melts. Nick actually had a theory about that but it was so crazy that he straight out rejected it at first. It didn’t make any sense. But what other explanation was there? “You are not trying to tell me that… Kate is my mate?” It sounded even more ridiculous when he said it out loud. “It doesn’t make any sense. She’s not a wolf. Why would the Moon Goddess pair me up with a cat?” “Why would she pair you up with me? She clearly thinks you are an odd one.” “But…” What was he supposed to say? He wanted to protest, to call it nonsense, but deep down he knew it was true. “That’s stupid. I don’t think cats even have mates as we do.” He dried himself and, wrapped only in a towel, sat down on a couch with his phone in hand. A quick search confirmed his initial thought. Cats didn’t mate for life and were by no means monogamous. There was no reason to believe werecats were any different. “Awesome. Just awesome.” Adira nodded solemnly. “Perhaps this one is different. She is clearly attracted to you as well, there must be some sort of a bond from her side too. Or perhaps their goddess and ours just pranked all of us.” “f*****g hell,” Nick groaned. As if his situation wasn’t complicated enough already. “If you and the stupid cat could at least stop fighting for dominance and let me and Kate solve this, that would be awesome.” “Nick, I’m an Alpha wolf. I can’t stop fighting for dominance. And neither can you, you have too much Alpha blood coursing through your veins.” That was a sad truth, Nick felt it all too well while he was having s*x with Kate. Adira snickered and continued, “And it seems like most cats believe they’re Alphas as well.” She chuckled over the idea of being commanded by a ten-pound furball. “But… you are not thinking about rejecting her, are you?” “No.” He didn’t have to think about the answer, the thought hadn’t even crossed his mind. Mate bond or not, he liked Kate. And Zoe. It wasn’t hard to imagine them as his little family, his own tiny pack he could cherish and protect. As Alpha or not, he didn’t really care about that part. Adira smirked upon noticing his thoughts. “Aren’t you getting a bit ahead of yourself? The cat will probably try to kill you the next time you touch Kate. And I can’t promise I won’t rough her up a bit if she starts acting out.” Great. Just great. *-*-* Kate really tried to convince Zoe they should have dinner without Nick today but, as always, the girl didn’t listen. When she sprinted out of the apartment to drag the werewolf over, Kate finally had a moment to deal with Fatim. “What the f**k was that? Were you trying to kill him? In my own f*****g bed?” “I don’t submit,” the cat hissed, swiping her tail from side to side. “Yea, I heard.” Kate had to fight not to roll her eyes. “It was just s*x, Fatim. It’s not like I swore to obey him for the rest of my life! Couldn’t you just let it go?” “That’s how it starts.” Unbelievable. Wasn’t it the stupid cat who wanted Kate to f**k Nick in the first place? “How what starts? He’s no danger, he will disappear soon and we will never hear from him again.” The thought was surprisingly painful. “Just let me handle this, please.” The cat just huffed in response and turned away, curling up on the ground and ignoring Kate completely. Perhaps it was for the best since Zoe has just returned, holding Nick’s hand and leading him to the table. There was a lot of nervosity in his expression but it seemed like he was going to be able to pretend nothing happened, at least in front of Zoe. They ate the leftovers from the previous day, Kate was still surprised by how well Nick’s cooking tasted. Fortunately, Zoe didn’t notice any tension between them and kept the conversation going, excitedly telling them about school and about the new swing Emmet built for her. Because Nick had already helped her with all the homework, Kate let her watch a movie before going to bed while she and Nick sat on the opposite sides of the couch, fidgeting nervously. Kate didn’t pay any attention to the singing animated characters, she honestly had no idea what the movie was even about. There were some talking animals in it and Zoe seemed to love it, that was good enough. Kate used the time trying to figure out what she should say to Nick, but when the final credits rolled over the screen and Zoe yawned, jumping off the couch to go brush her teeth, the woman was still as clueless as when the movie started. Fortunately, Zoe was so spent she didn’t even ask for a bedtime story, falling asleep seconds after Kate tucked her in. Watching the girl smile from her sleep, Kate couldn't help herself but stop for a moment and remember Emily. Kate’s sister always wanted a good life for Zoe, a better life than she and Kate had. A better family. Cat families sucked. The father was mostly gone by the time the woman gave birth, that was just such a normal cat thing that nobody batted an eye over it. The kittens were raised by the females around them, their mother, some aunts, grandmothers, whoever was available at the moment. Emily was different. She held on to her mate, made him stay, hoped that they would be an actual family. And if it weren’t for the stupid war, they probably would have made it. The other cats sneered at Em and her partner, forming a pair like that certainly wasn’t normal. But Kate felt a bit envious when she saw them together. It seemed like a much better life than the endless line of meaningless hookups cats normally went through. And who knew, maybe the others felt the same way, but were just afraid to admit it, to break the customs that have been around for centuries. Emily was never afraid of anything. And it got her killed. “Aww, what a wonderful family we would be,” Fatim snickered. “A wild and uncontrollable kitten and adolescent werewolf and werecat playing mommy and daddy. Look, plan what you want, I don’t give a s**t. But remember I’d rather kill him than let him be the head of this imaginary family of yours.” “And a stupid wolf and cat that are constantly trying to kill each other, awesome. I don’t want to have a family, especially not with a dog,” Kate frowned. Fatim rolled her eyes. “Are you trying to convince me or yourself?” Kate just went back to ignoring her, not wanting to think about an answer to that question. Nick was still on the couch, sitting at the edge of the seat, looking down at his hands. Only when she came closer did he lift his head and give her a nervous smile. He looked so timid again, it was beyond confusing. All she wanted was to step towards him, let him wrap his hands around her waist. To straddle him and f**k him right there on that stupid couch. She took a few steps back instead, sitting on a chair across from him, just so she wouldn't be tempted to touch him. “I thought you were one of those submissive wolves, those… huh, what you call them? Sigmas? Epsilons? The ones that have to slave their assess off for everyone.” Their terminology was seriously weird. Nick raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by the topic she chose to begin with. “Omegas?” A corner of his mouth twisted into an ironic smirk. “No. Although it would make a lot of things way easier for me.” “Omegas.” Kate rolled her eyes. “What’s with the Greek letters anyway, what the f**k are you, some college fraternity?” Nick chuckled, his shoulders going up and down in an amused shrug. “That’s just biology I guess, I never really thought about it. And they’re not slaves.” “Oh, really? The one I met claimed that in their pack they had to do all the work for everyone, cook and clean, they barely got any food and were constantly getting beaten up.” That wolf seriously hated all that pack s**t and was almost glad to have been made a rogue. Nick’s cheeks flushed a bit but he shook his head. “We did not treat them like that at Silverstreak.” “Really? So they could do whatever they wanted and play with you cool kids?” He scoffed. “Do I look like I was one of the cool kids? And are we really going to talk about pack politics now?” A frustrated sigh escaped his lips and he looked away. “I know what you are asking and I’m an Alpha. And yes, it proved to be a bit harder to control than I originally expected.” “Alpha?” Kate gaped at him for a few moments, unsure how to react. “Like… the leader of the entire f*****g pack?” No wonder he had such dominant instincts. Fatim hissed angrily in her mind, trying to push forward and fight him on the spot but, at least for now, Kate had no trouble holding her back. Running his hand through his hair, Nick sighed again. “I’m eighteen, Kate, the only thing I ever led was a school project and even that turned out to be a disaster and I had to do it all alone.” There was pain and a great deal of shame in his voice now, as if he was afraid Kate would resent him. She almost felt sorry asking him about it. “The pack’s Alpha was my father.” “Wait.” Something he said earlier popped into her mind. “You said that the Alpha called you all those horrible names and kicked you out. Was that your father?! What a sick f**k!” Kate never knew her own father but if they were all like that, perhaps it was for the best. Nick shrugged, avoiding her gaze, clearly uncomfortable with talking about it. Kate didn’t exactly know what to do with that new information so she pushed it aside for later and decided to finally get to the main topic. “Listen, I’m not looking for a relationship. I’m not in love, I’m not interested in holding hands or going on dates or I don’t know what other silly s**t couples do. We can keep having s*x, if we somehow manage to prevent your wolf and my cat from killing each other. But no feelings.” No, she most definitely didn’t have any feelings for this stupid werewolf. “You think you can do that?” “Sure.” He answered almost immediately, without thinking about it. Right, it was a stupid question anyway, what guy in their right mind would ever refuse an offer of casual s*x? His expression turned cryptic for a moment though, he looked like he was about to tell her something, but kept his mouth shut. A quick glance at the bulge formed on his pants told Kate that Nick would probably agree to anything just so she would agree to have s*x with him again. Despite how horribly their first try ended he was more than excited to risk his life again just to get laid. He probably hasn’t had s*x in a long time or… “Was that your first time?” Nick’s face turned red and he lowered his head, biting on his lip. “Was it so obvious?” Oh, for f**k’s sake, he was a bloody virgin before that? “Actually, that was pretty impressive for his first time,” Fatim said with a bit of reluctant admiration. “Yea, up until the point you tried to kill him, you dumb fluffball!” Damn, did she really have to screw up everything in Nick’s life? As if throwing him in a cage and torturing him shortly after he got kicked out of his home by his own father wasn’t enough, Kate and her stupid cat had to go and ruin his first s*x as well? “Oh, yea, he seems totally devastated and traumatized, not at all ready to f**k you again,” Fatim rolled her eyes and went back to ignoring her. The cat had a point, Nick really did seem like he was barely holding himself back from jumping up and crossing the small distance between them. A small part of Kate’s mind even wished he did it. Since Fatim looked like she was willing to stay back as long as Kate was in control of the act, the woman stood up, taking a few steps toward Nick. “No, it was not obvious at all. Even Fatim said that you were impressive and honestly, coming from her, that's an unprecedented compliment.” He drew a ragged breath when she stood above him, giving her a hungry look but staying still, clearly trying not to upset Fatim again. A smart move. “Not here,” she said and turned away, heading for her bedroom door. *** Next update: Friday
