Chapter 27

The food was great, despite Kate claiming it was not even going to be edible if she was left in charge of stirring it. They ate together, filling the time before the attack was going to start by chatting about unimportant things and sharing embarrassing stories from their childhood. Nick had way too many of those. He noticed Kate was getting more and more nervous so he led her to sit down on the couch. That way he could hug and comfort her while they kept talking. He was in the middle of telling her a marvelous story about how his father barged into Nick’s room without knocking, catching him watching Futurama on his laptop, and Nick had to quickly switch to another window and pretend he was actually watching porn and m**********g. Alpha Christopher could tolerate his son jerking off while watching other people have s*x. But he would never approve of him watching cartoons. Kate laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes but suddenly froze, her eyes turning glassy for a moment before she looked back at him with a serious expression. “It’s time?” he asked, guessing the Prime just mindlinked the entire gang, reminding them to get ready. “Yes.” She let out a shaky breath, leaning down to his neck and slowly inhaling before standing up. “Let’s go get Zoe then,” Nick nodded and got up as well, grabbing her hand. Nick really only knew his part of the plan in detail. A few of the cats were supposed to sneak into the facility beforehand, hide there until everyone was ready, and then provide various distractions to draw as many of the birds away from the main building as possible. The main group was going to storm the secret passage, break into the building where Ralo was holding Zoe, find her, and get her out. And then the cats planned to blow the whole place up. To Nick, it all sounded like a plot from some Hollywood action flick but then again, he was not really part of the plan. Adira was the one doing all the work. They took a pickup truck. Nick never got a license, so Kate drove it while he was sitting next to her. About fifteen cats were hissing at each other in the back. It was wildly surrealistic and Nick had to smirk over the thought that it was probably illegal to transport animals like that, but the werecats would hardly be happy about being stuffed into cat transport boxes. Kate parked on the dirt road not far from the place where Nick met with Julia and the cats jumped off, some lingering around, some heading straight to the cornfields. Everyone had a task to do. The most problematic thing for Nick was that he couldn’t access the gang’s mind link so while the others could communicate with each other in real-time, he was going to have no idea what was happening. His job was just to follow Kate around and tear anything in front of them to shreds. This first part made Nick happy. The second part made Adira ecstatic. He quickly undressed, grateful that it was dark again, not really needing all the cats from their assault group to stare at his naked ass. Just as he was reaching to pull down his boxers, a black and gray tabby cat emerged from behind the truck and brushed her tail against his legs. “Hi, Fatim.” Nick leaned down to scratch the cat’s head, pulling his hand back when he heard her hiss violently. But it didn’t seem she was angry at him, she kept glaring in between the tall corn stalks where the other cats went. “I think she doesn’t want anyone else to stare at your naked ass either,” Adira chuckled, eager to finally shift and enjoy some action. “Not that you would have some ass worth looking at anyway, you are so skinny you look like a twig with a dick.” Nick rolled his eyes but knew it was pointless to respond to her snappy comments. The boxers joined the rest of his clothes in the truck and he let Adira step forward, surprised that he didn’t feel any pain at all this time, just slight discomfort as he felt his bones crack and his joints shift. The tabby cat looked so tiny from Adira’s perspective that Nick had to laugh, glad that nobody could hear him. Adira felt the same way, she even lowered her head to sniff Fatim and then stuck out her tongue, licking the cat from head to tail. Fatim hissed violently, the fur on her back bristled. Adorable. “Play nice!” Nick reminded Adira. The situation was too serious to start provoking conflicts. “Ugh, fine.” Adira squealed in pretended horror, stepping back from the furious cat and curling on the ground, covering her eyes with her paw. Fatim hissed again and came closer to smack the huge wolf on the head with her tiny paw. Letting out a few quiet barks that sounded a lot like laughing, Adira jumped back up on her feet and playfully snapped her mouth shut just inches away from Fatim. “Adira! Stop messing around! You girls can play all you want when we get Zoe safely out of there.” Sighing, Adira lowered her head, letting Fatim smack her over the snout. “Sorry, I got a bit distracted. I’ll be more focused now.” The cat watched her for a moment to make sure there would be no more shenanigans and then nodded, turning to the other cats and waiting until they gathered around. A huge red maine coon among them surprised Nick. It was almost twice as big as Fatim, still small in comparison to Adira but much bigger than the other cats. “I think that’s Emmet,” Adira said after sniffing the cat. The coon bumped his forehead against Adira’s snout and purred softly. “It looks like he likes me.” “Or he’s still afraid you are going to rip his ass open with that tranquilizer gun,” Nick smirked, watching the cats clearly communicating through the mind link for a few moments before everyone’s heads moved up and down, silently agreeing with whatever was said. Fatim took the lead, soundlessly weaving her way through the corn stalks. Before entering, Adira nudged Emmet’s cat, making him look up with his head tilted to the side. The wolf jerked her head towards her back and she lowered herself down to the ground. Emmet’s cat let out a quiet surprised meow but carefully jumped up on Adira’s back, lying down so he wouldn’t have to use his claws to keep his balance as the wolf started moving forward. “I don’t remember seeing this on Animal Planet,” Nick laughed, imagining how majestic a cat riding a huge wolf must have looked. Fatim looked back at them and Nick was absolutely sure that Kate was rolling her eyes somewhere in the cat’s mind. And he was also sure she wouldn’t hesitate to hop on the wolf as well if she didn’t have to lead the whole group. Perhaps some other time. *-*-* Kate wished Nick was connected to the gang’s mind link so she could yell at him for letting Adira act like an i***t. This was serious, dammit! As much as she would love to let Fatim play with the wolf, they were in the enemy territory and Zoe’s life was in danger. Idiots. Still, she had to chuckle when Fatim glanced back at Adira and saw Karim, Emmet’s cat, riding the wolf’s back as if she were some stupid pony. A pony with lots of sharp teeth. If it was any of the other cats, Kate would probably jump in and kick their ass, but Emmet was not a threat, so he got a free pass this time. Fatim was still a bit jealous though, feeling like she should be the one riding her mate. “When we save Zoe, you can ride them all you want,” Kate tried to keep her focused. They were coming closer to the secret tunnel entrance and the cat’s sensitive smell had already caught the scent of several birds. Everyone assumed their positions, Adira hiding further away in the field since she was bigger and easier to spot than the tiny cats. The birds hadn’t noticed them yet. “We are ready,” she reported through the mind link. A couple of scouts that had snuck inside the facility earlier confirmed they were in position as well. “Good.” That was Grams, her soothing voice calming everyone. She was near the gas tanks, ready to light the place on fire the second Kate and her team were out of the building. With Zoe, of course. “You all know what to do. Fight well.” At her command, lights went out in most of the complex. A few smaller explosions could be heard from a distance. Kate watched as the birds guarding the tunnel entrance jerked their heads towards the sounds, no doubt surprised and confused, trying to access their mind link and find out what was going on. That was the cue for Kate and her team. Pure adrenalin flowing through her veins, Fatim leaped forward, taking out the nearest bird stupid enough to be sitting on the ground. The sharp claws nearly decapitated the animal, the tiny blood pool around the body getting bigger as the guy shifted back into his human form after he died. Three more birds died before they could take off and fly out of the cat's range. The ginger fur around Karim’s mouth was covered in blood as he grabbed one of the pigeons mid-air and tore its wing clear off. Footsteps rushed through the tunnel. The birds couldn’t exactly fight against the cats in their animal forms and they usually went for something creepy in the middle. Six human faces with sharp beaks appeared behind the gate, staring at the c*****e outside. They didn’t have much time to consider their options since in the next moment a huge black blur passed right next to Fatim, barreling through the door and painting the inside of the tunnel red as Adira began tearing the flabbergasted guys inside to shreds. Alright, it was useful to have a huge wolf on their side in a fight. It wouldn’t be very nice without her. The passage was short, ending with a thick security door locked up from the inside. Julia had warned them about that and Kate nodded as she watched the slender body of Mel’s cat sneak into a ventilation shaft. They only had to wait a few moments before Mel’s naked form appeared behind the door and the woman fiddled with a control panel to get it open. “Be careful, wolf,” she looked at Adira before shifting back into a cat. “They know about you now.” The big wolf nodded, her tongue sliding out of her mouth, cleaning the blood off her lips. Fatim’s head jerked to the side as she listened to the sounds of heavy pounding and panting getting closer. “s**t,” she hissed, “shouldn’t Samantha and Liz have taken care of the f*****g dogs?!” The group quickly scattered, cats taking refuge in the nearest trees and high places. Fatim jumped at a windowsill of the nearest building, watching a group of five large and pissed-off pitbulls sprint closer. “Are you sure Adira can handle those beasts?” “She said she would.” Kate tried to sound confident but even she shivered upon seeing the monstrous dogs running towards the black wolf. Yes, Adira was bigger and smarter, but there were five of them and it only took one to bite a big enough hole into her neck that her werewolf healing powers wouldn’t have a chance to heal her before she bled out. It looked like she was not going to fight them though. As they approached her, barking their lungs out, she just barked back at them. The deep sound resonated through all the creatures around, the cats included. “They’re doing that commanding thing again,” Fatim smirked, remembering the tone Nick tried to use on Kate the last time they had s*x. “Yea, apparently it works on dogs way better than it does on cats,” Kate nodded as four of the dogs whined and lowered themselves to the ground, exposing their necks and stomachs in a sign of submission. An Alpha command, that’s how Nick called it. The fifth beast barked angrily, challenging Adira. It was either completely stupid or suicidal, the wolf was almost three times big as the dog, towering above it, lips rolled back into a vicious snarl. The fight ended before it even began. The dog charged against Adira and she jumped to the side in a movement so fast that even Fatim’s sharp vision could barely comprehend it. As the dog was moving past her, Adira snapped her jaws once. That was all it took, the dog's body hit the ground, the head rolling away, splattering blood all around. A deep, violent growl reverberated through the wolf’s body when she repeated whatever order she was giving to the other animals. The dogs squealed and ran off as quickly as they possibly could. “Okay, we are definitely keeping this one.” Kate nodded, impressed by Adira’s skills. “Yes, we are.” “Ah, you have finally made up your mind, Catherine? Do tell.” “Not now.” No, now was hardly the right time for making important life choices and planning for the future. They still needed to find Zoe. *** Next update: Thursday Feel free to check out my F.acebook page @AuthorAnnaSvoboda for information about my other books :)
