Chapter 3: The Backlash
It was Mark Twain calling.
The audacity.
Without hesitation, she hung up. There was no way she was going to converse with that cheat.
Twain Entertainment CEO's office
Mark Twain was pacing around his office in anger.
He couldn't believe Lily Costa could ever take such a step.
Why did she change? He thought.
Lily Costa had always been a girl he could control. Now, it looked like she was out of his grasp.
He needed to do something about this.
He then sat down and faced his laptop.
Not long after, Rita Spence walked into his office.
"Baby! Can you believe Lily now?" she asked as she walked up to him.
"Relax dear! Please sit down." Mark Twain said as he stood up to calm her down.
"That girl wants to bring this company down. I have always knew she never meant well." Rita Spence said as she cursed under her breath.
"What ever this is, I'm sure she has a reason for her actions. Let's find out first please."
"What? Are you trying to say this is our fault? Or is this my fault? Baby are you now blaming me? So you still love Lily." Rita Spence sobbed as she spoke.
"Don't conclude. You know I still love you no matter what."
"So someone has to take the blame."
Thinking about it, Mark Twain thought it made sense.
"So what do you suggest we do?" he asked.
"It's simple. Accept an interview and push all blames on her." she said, trying to convince him.
"I'll do that then. Just give me time." he said, picked up the cup of tea on his table and fed her.
It was already evening by the time Lily was done with writing a verse.
Kira Jones was already in her home by then.
Walking in, she placed a cup of tea on her study table.
"Have some tea." Kira Jones said and sat down opposite her.
"Thanks!" Lily Costa said as she picked it up and sipped.
"Don't let your guards down. Mark won't sleep, especially Rita. I hope you are aware."
"I'm aware and I hope you're ready." Lily Costa said, giving her a side eye as she sipped her tea.
"I'm always up and ready!" Kira Jones said as she smiled.
"Have a good night dear!" Lily Costa said as she stood up and went to her room.
The next morning, what woke Lily Costa up was the sound of her phone ringing.
Trying to sit-up, she cleared her eyes as she tried to see who was calling her so early.
Seeing as it was Kira Jones, she picked immediately.
"Good morning Kira!"
"Morning Lily! Hurry up and check the news!" Kira Jones urgent tone sounded.
"Oh OK sure!" she said and hung up.
When Lily Costa opened her phone, she froze.
An interview?
Mark Twain accepted an interview?
What was he planning?
For sometime, she sat still as she thought of how shameless Mark Twain was being.
She then placed her phone aside and went to freshen up for the day.
Two hours later, Lily sat down in her study room to watch the full interview.
When the video started playing, she pushed the laptop a bit and sat back to watch.
The interview went pretty well at the beginning before they dived into the main reason for the interview.
Interviewer: so there are rumours spreading about your supposed wife to be joining forces with your biggest rival Mendes Entertainment. How true is that?
Mark Twain: That's very true. (he confirmed, nodding his head.)
Interviewer: how do you feel about that?
Mark Twain: (putting up an innocent and hurt look) it's disappointing actually. It will be a lie if I say I'm okay with it. Not someone I had put all my blood and sweat on.
Interviewer: Were you aware of this?
Mark Twain: never
Like that, the interview ended.
Lily smiled.
He really did acted right.
All his blood and sweat? Amazing!
When she went online, she could see the effect of the interview.
"LILY COSTA: THE BETRAYAL!"
"MARK TWAIN HEARTBROKEN AFTER HIS FIANCE LEFT HIM FOR HIS RIVAL"
"LILY COSTA BEING SO UNGRATEFUL"
None of the headlines were in her favor as everyone believed Mark Twain to be the victim.
Only her due hard fans could speak up on her behave.
Picking up her phone, she dialed her manager's number.
"Hello Kira! Upload the evidence." she said and hung up.
Not long after, the pictures and videos of Mark Twain having an affair with her best friend surfaced with raging headlines.
"THE REAL REASON LILY COSTA LEFT MARK TWAIN"
"MARK TWAIN IS SUCH A JERK"
"MARK TWAIN CHEATED ON LILY COSTA WITH HER BEST FRIEND, RITA SPENCE"
"RITA SPENCE HAD AN AFFAIR WITH HER BEST FRIEND'S FIANCE"
"I have always known there is a good reason Lily Costa left. I wonder why everyone was judging."
"How could Mark be so mean. Lily was way too faithful."
"Rita is such a w***e. How dare she?"
"Leaving was the best decision Lily made. I mean, who wouldn't want her?"
Mark Twain didn't see it coming at all. Rita Spence was in the office with him at that time as they looked at each other in the eyes, clueless as to what they should do.
"This is getting out of hand." Mark Twain spat.
"No, Lily is getting out of hand. Urrgh! That b***h, I can't stand her." Rita Spence said with bitterness written all over her face.
"This is no time to hate. My name is spreading for the wrong reasons."
"Is it just your name or our name? Don't tell me you're about to dumb me." Rita Spence said with teary eyes.
Breathing heavily, Mark Twain walked to her and squatted.
"I will never leave you. We will sort this out together. Do you trust me?" he said, raising her chin.
"I do, but what should we do?" she asked as she looked into his eyes.
