I went outside immediately, following the smell, and soon discovered large patches of blood in the forest around our cave. There were also some small pieces of meat, clearly processed by humans.
Looking up, I saw that the blood and meat bits were scattered every few steps, leading into the depths of the forest. I instantly understood that it was the work of Leo and his gang. They intended to use the wolf pack against us!
For the past few days, we had been living in peace, thinking that they were afraid of us. Now it seemed they were preparing these blood baits.
'These bastards are shameless.'
This method was indeed insidious. In the dead of winter, even the wolves were severely lacking food. Coupled with the unusual wolf howls just now, I guessed the wolf pack had already arrived. They had stopped howling because they were close and didn't want to alert their prey!
This realization made me feel like I was facing a deadly threat. I couldn't believe Leo and his gang had come up with such an idea. It seemed they had become quite familiar with the behavior of the beasts on this island.
I knew Leo was a good-for-nothing. Such a devious plan couldn't have come from him alone. There must be someone smart behind the scenes.
Thinking quickly, I rushed back to the cave entrance and woke the girls up, gripping my gun tightly.
The girls were scared, so I did my best to calm them down. "The wolves are here. It's too late to run. The safest place is inside the cave."
Taking a deep breath, I spoke seriously to everyone, "Wolves can sense their prey's fear. If you show any fear, they will perceive our weakness and attack us crazily. Then, we will surely die."
The girls trembled with fear, with only Eva managing to stay calm.
I continued, "Wolves fear fire. I plan to use the sound of gunfire or the sight of fire to try and scare them away!"
I pointed to the nearby bonfire, instructing, "Grab some torches and get ready to throw them." The girls tried to calm themselves and followed my instructions.
Honestly, I didn't know if this plan would work, but we had no other choice. Mandy and Eva were my women. Even if this plan failed, I wouldn't let them get hurt.
I had decided that if the wolves didn't retreat, I would take the meat stored in the cave and rush out to lead the wolves away. Whether I could escape them would be up to fate. With a resolute mindset, I stood at the cave entrance, looking outside.
Soon, eerie sounds came from the forest, like claws stepping on fallen leaves. Then, dozens of green eyes lit up in the dark, like ghostly flames.
The wolves had arrived.
Since being stranded on the island, I had hunted predatory animals like the furry wolves, but I relied mainly on traps. These furry wolves were more like dogs than real wolves. Now, I was facing real gray wolves, fierce and cunning, and there were dozens of them. I was incredibly nervous.
But I knew that I couldn't show any fear. Somehow, I gathered the courage to coldly stare at the wolves, looking directly into their eyes. I raised my gun and, with a roar, fired a shot!
However, to my shock, my reliable Type 38 rifle suddenly misfired at this critical moment!
This gun had been buried underground for decades. Despite its excellent quality, it misfired occasionally, but very rarely. I never expected such a low-probability misfire to happen at this crucial moment. I felt doomed.
The girls were even more desperate. Zoe was so scared that she fell to the ground.
I was ready to sacrifice myself. Gritting my teeth, I held my gun and slowly walked out of the cave.
"Zack! What are you doing?!" Mandy reached out to pull me back.
"All of you, stay inside! Don't come out. I have a plan to deal with them!" I sternly warned Mandy without turning back. "When the wolves leave, take them and hide somewhere else!"
Mandy wanted to say something but was worried about disrupting my plan, so she reluctantly retreated into the cave.
The wolves watched me from the forest. Their eyes, glowing in the dark, seemed like lights from hell. They moved slowly as if observing me.
The wolves hadn't attacked yet. The lead wolf stared at me, seemingly wary.
Sweat poured down my back, but I was puzzled. Why hadn't the wolves attacked?
After ten minutes of this standoff, my nerves were on the verge of breaking. I couldn't let it drag on. Desperately thinking of all possible ways, I remembered the hidden cave.
Right! I had a sudden inspiration. That hidden cave might give me a chance to survive and buy time for Mandy and the others to escape!
Determined, I was about to rush out.
Suddenly, a white shadow darted past me. It was the furry wolf we had raised, named White. It somehow managed to bite through the cage and rushed out of the cave. The small creature fearlessly charged toward the wolf pack at an incredible speed. Before I could even react, White had already reached the gray wolves and was barking fiercely at them.
The wolves were surprised that such a tiny creature dared to challenge them. It enraged the lead wolf.
The lead wolf howled and lunged at White. White, clearly prepared, dodged into the forest. The gray wolves chased after it, their footsteps quickly fading into the forest.
Drenched in cold sweat, I felt like I had just escaped death.
For a long time, I believed my roar had scared the wolves, preventing them from attacking. But later events made me realize things were not that simple.
At that moment, I sighed in relief, but anger surged within me.
"White probably won't come back," I said, my eyes red.
The girls had seen White's brave act, and their eyes filled with tears. Stella, who had raised White, cried outright. I stepped forward and pulled Stella into my arms. She seemed to find support there and cried on my shoulder. Unsure how to console her, I gently patted her back.
If not for White, we might have died this time. If I had been less vigilant or if the wolves had come during the day when I wasn't there, someone could have been hurt!
I immediately made a new decision. No matter what, we couldn't stay in this cave any longer.
Leo and his gang had to be dealt with soon. The longer we waited, the worse it would be for us. I feared they might find guns.
As we packed our things to leave, we heard soft footsteps at the cave entrance.
I quickly grabbed my gun, aiming at the entrance.
But it was White bouncing in. Its white fur was dirty with mud and leaves, looking both messy and amusing.
We were all stunned. White barked at us a few times as if seeking praise, proudly puffing out its chest.
"White!" Stella rushed to hug White. After checking that it was not hurt, she cried tears of relief.
The other girls also teared up.
The tense atmosphere in the cave dissipated, and I smiled genuinely.
"I'll find them!" I narrowed my eyes, staring at the dark forest. "I swear I will kill that bastard Leo!"
