Chapter 49

The more I read, the sloppier Eva's handwriting became, with some tear stains still visible. This letter unraveled many mysteries in my heart. Eva was indeed no ordinary person. However, after reading this letter, my confusion and pain intensified. What exactly was on this island? What made the Germans and Japanese during World War II, Eva's father, and even Eva herself come here, risking everything? It wasn't mentioned in Eva's letter. Did she not want to involve me, or did she not know? Clearly, the secrets of this island were far beyond what ordinary people could reach. A deep sense of powerlessness rose within me, and a great sadness overwhelmed my heart. Was I going to ignore Eva? Maybe Eva was right. My rational side told me to forget about her, return to my peaceful urban life, and wait quietly for her return. But how likely was that? During World War II, the Axis powers were the most powerful forces in the world, yet they couldn't leave the island. How could Eva return safely? 'Was I going to be a coward and let an island take my lover's life?' I was tormented by this painful dilemma. So, during countless nights after Eva left, amidst the struggle, I made another foolish decision  that was true to my heart. I planned to build a boat to send Stella and the others back home, letting them leave this place. As for myself, I would stay on this island, jumping into that damn spring, following the rushing water to track Eva, just like she did to find her father. I was no longer the ordinary person I used to be. I had experienced true love and  fallen in love with someone else. Even if I couldn't help Eva, I was willing to face all the dangers and difficulties with her! Moreover, at that moment, I might not have realized that the secrets of this island greatly attracted me for some reason. Deep inside, something was stirring, like an inescapable fate. After making this decision, it felt like a huge weight had lifted off my heart. The pain was deeply buried, and once again, I was filled with energy and passion. In the days that followed, I threw myself into building the boat. We had retrieved our previous supplies and obtained Sam's savings as a supplement, so we were now well-off and didn't lack food. It greatly freed up our labor force. After a thorough discussion, we finalized our goals and plans. We decided to build a large boat that could carry ten passengers. It was indeed a significant project. We spent our days gathering flax, twisting ropes, cutting bamboo, chopping wood, and feeding the wolf White. Days went by. About seven or eight days later, a partially completed boat had taken shape in the open space outside our cave. Building a boat wasn't difficult. However, we couldn't be sure if it would be seaworthy. What if it didn't float? What if it fell apart shortly after launching? It was an isolated island, and many species of plants and animals differed from those outside. Who knew if a boat made from this island's bamboo would float? Even if these issues were resolved, would the boat still float after carrying so many people and necessary supplies? Additionally, the unpredictable weather in this sea area was a concern. These were all issues we had to consider. For everyone's safety, our boat needed testing. On a sunny day, we pushed the boat to the seaside. To our delight, the boat floated, but unfortunately, it couldn't bear much weight. Soon, I came up with a solution. We could find some lightweight hollow plants to tie to the boat to increase its buoyancy and load capacity. After searching for a while, we found some hollow vines. I wrapped these vines around the boat, and finally, our Noah's Ark was completed! It was a drizzly day, but our spirits were high as if the sun was shining brightly. Everyone was shouting and cheering on the beach, even on the verge of tears. In front of us, the newly made boat floated steadily on the sea. I had placed stones on it to simulate the weight of the girls and the supplies. After a whole night's test, the boat was perfectly fine. We had endured so many hardships on this island, and now it was finally time to leave! Everyone was as happy as a kid. Stella even gave a big hug to Crystal, the woman she usually couldn't get along with. "We're finally going back! I want to drink coffee, attend fashion weeks, and eat baked lobster and French cuisine!" Stella said, counting on her fingers, drooling as she spoke. I shook my head with a smile, wanting to take a picture of her silly expression to tease her. Mandy and Zoe also held my hands and embraced me. Seeing everyone so excited and were about to go crazy, I felt reluctant but still had to break some bad news. "Although the boat is ready, we can't leave just yet. I've been observing the coast and tides these past few days, and I've discovered a problem. There's a strong onshore current. Without the right wind direction, it's going to be very difficult to leave this coast with a boat that has no engine. Of course, the wind direction will change, probably in a few days." The onshore current was a hidden undercurrent beneath the waves that constantly flowed toward the shore, often opposing the normal water flow. If we got caught in these two currents, the terrifying power of the sea could easily destroy our boat. So, we needed the help of the wind. "Zack is right. We need to wait for a few more days. We've been on this darn island for so long; a few more days is not a big deal!" Mandy also calmed down. Everyone nodded sadly but couldn't hide their excitement, chattering about what they planned to do once they returned. I was genuinely happy for the girls. But deep down, a sense of unexplained melancholy rose within me. 'Everyone is leaving, but I still need to continue struggling on this strange island.' In the following days, everyone busily prepared for the journey. Every night, we sat around the campfire, eagerly discussing what kind of accidents might happen on the sea and what supplies we needed to prepare. During this period, everyone's enthusiasm was at its peak, and everyone was in high spirits. Hope was the most uplifting thing. "Zack," Zoe's voice suddenly pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned to look at her and found she had moved away from the campfire to sit beside me, holding my arm. Her cheeks were red, and I thought it was from the heat of the fire. Smiling, I reached out and pinched her cheek. "Why aren't you chatting with them? What brings you here?" Meeting my gaze, Zoe's face turned even redder, and she instinctively lowered her head. But soon, it was as if she mustered some courage, and she suddenly leaned in and kissed me. I was slightly taken aback, not expecting Zoe to kiss me. "You..." "Zack, I... I like you!" Zoe's face was steaming with shyness, but her tone was very firm. "When we go back, can you... be my boyfriend?" Zoe stammered as she finished her sentence, then looked at me expectantly. I felt a pang of sadness in my heart. Of course, I liked Zoe. She was cute and gentle. Having a girlfriend like her would make life incredibly happy. But at that moment, Eva's bright smile appeared in my mind, and I instantly sobered up. 'No, Eva is still in danger. I can't ditch her!' My gaze gradually became determined as I thought about how to gently reject Zoe. Suddenly, a cold wind blew in, and both Zoe and I shivered at the cave entrance. I quickly turned to look outside and instantly widened my eyes. A blizzard was sweeping in, covering the sky. The pitch-black night sky began to turn eerily white. Cold air continuously seeped in through the cracks in the cave entrance, making us feel bone-chilling. The sound of the howling wind faintly echoed, as if some ancient giant was roaring in the distance. Everything I saw turned white in an instant.
