I shot at the tree trunk intentionally. The thunderous sound echoed through the forest, and the trunk trembled violently, looking terrifying!
The two were startled. The woman even fell to the ground in fright, scrambling back behind the tree for cover. They hadn't expected me to fire the gun, and the power of the shot was greater than they had imagined. They were people from a peaceful time, unaccustomed to such violence. They fell silent instantly, stopping their provocations.
I continued to reload the gun. This time, I aimed not at the tree trunk but at the man's head.
The two of them seemed to sense the killing intent from me. They exchanged glances and then turned to sprint into the forest. In the darkness, I could even hear them running through the leaves.
'Do you think you can run away?' They still had my prey in their hands; I wasn't letting them escape. I chased after them immediately!
I had been a soldier, so my physical fitness was better than most. Since recovering from my last illness, my physical condition improved even more.
It didn't take long for me to close the distance between us.
The man became exhausted quickly. Seeing me still full of energy, he gritted his teeth and threw down the hunchback birds and clothes, adopting a defiant stance and shouting, "Go ahead and kill me if you dare!"
I sneered. 'After facing constant danger on this island, I've gained extraordinary courage. Who do you think you are? I killed Leo, so what's the difference between killing one and killing a few more?'
Seeing that I didn't respond, the man assumed I was afraid of committing murder and tried to escape again. But they didn't know the wilderness as well as I did, and they weren't as fit as I was. They had no chance of escaping me.
I caught up to him again, but this time I didn't give him a chance to speak. I raised my gun and fired! With a loud bang, the man's left thigh burst into a spray of blood. He screamed and fell with a thud.
The woman screamed, glanced at the bleeding man, and without hesitation, abandoned him and ran. I didn't plan to chase her.
The smell of blood would easily attract jungle predators, and I didn't want to put myself in danger. I had already recovered my prey and snow jacket, so there was no need to take more risks.
The man clutched his leg, screaming in pain. Seeing me approach, his eyes were filled with the fear of death. His femoral artery was severed, and with the limited resources on the island, he was as good as dead! At that moment, I only had three words for him: 'Serves you right!'
Food was scarce on this island. Food meant life. They stole our supplies, leaving us with nothing, which was no different from murder. His fate was of his own making.
In a few strides, I reached him and realized he was indeed someone I knew. He was William Milton, a clerk from the company. He had always followed Leo around, like a lapdog. When Leo bullied me, William was also there, taunting and mocking me.
I suddenly had a strong feeling. Could it be that Leo wasn't dead? I had never questioned it before because the cliff was so high. How could anyone survive that fall? But maybe it was one of those crazy TV show situations. Could there be a lake at the bottom of the cliff?
Otherwise, why would Quinn betray us so decisively? Leo might be a useless person, but he was great at sweet-talking women. Stella's trust in him was proof of that.
With this thought, I squatted in front of William, who was unconscious, and struck his face with the butt of my gun.
William groaned and woke up. He looked at me with terror, like he was seeing the Grim Reaper. He still tried to act tough and shouted, "You coward! You don't have the guts to shoot me because you're afraid of going to jail, right? Well, I'm not afraid of death! Go ahead and kill me, but I'll drag you to hell with me!"
I found his words laughable. I kicked William in the face. He screamed, spitting out blood, with two teeth barely visible in the bloody foam.
"Answer my questions. Say one extra word, and you'll get another beating!" I said coldly. Seeing that William didn't dare to speak, I continued, "Is Leo still alive?"
"Of course he is! You'd better let me go. Otherwise, Leo will come for revenge. Compared to him, you're nothing but trash. We have dozens of people in our group. Are you scared now?" Speaking of Leo, William started boasting again.
This guy clearly didn't understand the situation. He was still thinking the situation was similar to that of the company. Leo might be a loser, but he knew how to boast and maneuver, always using his position to trouble me. Back then, for the sake of my family and career, I could only endure all of it. But now? I didn't bother arguing with William. I kicked him in the mouth.
"You...you..." William's teeth were kicked out. His mouth was full of blood, making his speech slurred.
His claim that Leo had dozens of people at his camp was obviously a lie. If they had so many people, why would they be sneaking around? I wanted to continue questioning him about their group’s location.
But at that moment, I heard familiar bird calls nearby. It was the hunchback birds. Judging by the sound, there were at least twenty of them. My heart tightened, knowing I couldn't delay any longer. I had considered taking William to get more information, but I was worried he might ambush me when I wasn’t paying attention. It wasn't worth the risk.
I hadn't expected the hunchback birds to arrive so quickly!
The smell of blood on him would attract the birds, buying me time to escape. Otherwise, I might not survive facing a flock of hunchback birds alone. I quickly tied William to a large tree, poured the blood of the dead hunchback birds around him, and wrapped the birds in my snow jacket before running!
The hunchback birds had come to avenge their kin! A massive flock quickly gathered in the sky, their wings so large that they blocked out the moon.
William was terrified, struggling and begging for his life. "Zack, don't leave me! I was just talking nonsense. Please forgive me! Save me, and I'll help you against Leo, I promise..."
Before William could finish, I heard a terrible scream behind me.
