Stella helped Zoe up and fixed her clothes. At that moment, Stella looked like an angry peacock. Even Mandy looked at me with suspicion.
I covered my face, feeling the sting of the slap, and felt helpless. 'What the hell is this? Not only was the moment ruined, but now I'm also being mistaken for a r****t?'
"It was just an accident! Zoe fell, and I accidentally kissed her when I tried to catch her."
"You're full of excuses, Zack. Do you think I'm stupid?" Stella said coldly.
I couldn't be bothered to explain to this brainless woman. "If you don't believe me, ask Zoe."
"Stella, it's true. There was an accident just now," Zoe said anxiously. "Don't misunderstand Zack!"
Stella paused, clearly taken aback. To my surprise, she even seemed to doubt Zoe, staring at her face for a long time with a skeptical look. "Well, you two have always been ambiguous. I was just meddling too much!" She stood up and walked back towards the cave.
Seeing Stella leave, Mandy sighed, helped Zoe up, and comforted me, "Zack, I believe you." Of course, Mandy was sensible, unlike Stella, who was just a self-righteous fool.
I gave Zoe my clothes to wear, and the three of us returned to the cave.
In the afternoon, I decided not to venture out again. The nights on this deserted island were too cold, and yesterday's grass mats only provided minimal warmth. We needed to add more facilities, or we risked getting sick.
So, I had everyone work overtime to make beds. I also planned to use the remaining bamboo and straw to make a bamboo gate to block the cave entrance, which would keep out most of the cold night wind.
I split the bamboo and took the strips to the campfire to dry them out. Then I cut the dried bamboo into strips and wove them together. Soon, a bamboo gate took shape.
I also took some straw, threaded it like a grass skirt, and fixed it onto the bamboo gate. A simple windproof bamboo gate was quickly made.
"Wow, Zack, you're amazing! Now we won't be cold at night!" Mandy cheered excitedly.
Zoe gave me a thumbs-up, her face full of admiration.
Stella snorted and muttered something, but she still curiously glanced at the bamboo gate several times.
Seeing the cheerful atmosphere, Leo, sitting in the corner processing grass, was filled with jealousy but didn't dare say anything. He finally understood that on this deserted island, he couldn't even compare to one of my fingers. He had become much more obedient.
However, I was still not satisfied with the bamboo gate. It could block the wind, but it wouldn't stop wild animals.
I called Leo over and had him dig a pit at the cave entrance. I then took the fire axe and went nearby to cut some thorn bushes. Leo, fearing my previous warning, didn't dare slack off and had dug the trench as I instructed by the time I returned with the thorns.
I threw the thorns into the trench, creating a simple trap. The thorns on this island were wild and unhandled, growing ferociously.
The thorns were over five centimeters long, with bases as thick as thumbs and tips as sharp as needles. If someone fell in, they'd be covered in bloody holes. Smaller animals might die on the spot, while larger ones would be severely injured.
After laying the thorns, I covered the trench with a layer of straw to disguise it. It now looked like regular ground.
While I worked on the trap, the women finished making our grass beds. Although they were just piles of dry grass mixed with clothing, it was much better than the beginning, and I was very satisfied.
That night, we had a campfire, food, a bamboo gate to block the wind and danger, and soft grass beds. Everyone's face lit up with genuine smiles. Compared to the initial days of exposed hardship, we now had a place to call home.
After eating and drinking, we couldn't help but reminisce about city life. As we talked, Stella and Quinn teared up.
"It's been so many days. Why hasn't the rescue team come? Have we been forgotten?" Quinn said sadly.
"Don't worry. They're coming. They must be looking for us. They won't abandon us!" Leo said excitedly.
Mandy opened her mouth and touched something in her pocket, but she didn't say anything.
The prolonged absence of the rescue team dampened everyone's spirits.
The shadow of the crashed rescue plane lingered in my mind. I had a hunch. There was a huge secret on this island. If we didn't find out why the rescue team crashed, we might never leave.
The crashed plane was our only clue. It was submerged in the sea, and we could only explore it when the tide receded. Even if we didn't find any secrets, there would be valuable survival supplies in the rescue team's plane.
We had to go!
After discussing for a while, we felt tired and went to our grass beds to sleep.
Unexpectedly, in the middle of the night, I heard someone getting up. It was Mandy, sneaking over to my grass bed and gently placing her hand on my waist.
Mandy's unique fragrance filled my nostrils, making me restless.
'Could it be that Mandy has changed her mind and wants to be with me?'
"Mandy." I grabbed her hand impulsively and rolled over, pinning her beneath me.
