I aimed for its other eye, but the monster was thrashing wildly in pain, and the shot only hit its leg.
The two shots finally made the creature fearful. It roared a few more times in frustration before limping away into the blizzard.
The creature had already been hit several times earlier. The injuries caused it unbearable pain, finally forcing it to leave.
Seeing the creature disappear into the storm, I rushed to Susie's side. She lay motionless on the ground, her clothes soaked in blood, and the ground beneath her stained red.
The other girls gathered around. As soon as they got close to Susie, they couldn't help but gasp in shock.
"She's bleeding so much!"
"Susie, what's wrong? Wake up!"
I picked Susie up quickly and carried her back to the cave, shouting to Zoe, "Zoe, get the medical supplies and help treat her wounds!"
Zoe snapped out of her fear and hurried to do as I said.
Back in the cave, I laid Susie on the grass mat and tore open her clothes. Her back was covered in deep, horrifying claw marks.
Fortunately, she had some luck on her side. If she hadn't dodged when the monster attacked, its claw might have decapitated her.
Even so, Susie's injuries were severe. The wounds on her back were so deep that even her bones were visible. Her face was as white as paper, and she had already lost consciousness.
"Get the medicine, hurry up!" I shouted in desperation, feeling guilty. If I had run faster, Susie wouldn't have been hurt!
The medical conditions on this island were abysmal. With such serious injuries, it was uncertain if Susie would survive. If she died, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself.
Crystal, feeling equally guilty, thought that if she had stopped Susie earlier, this might not have happened. The usually arrogant Crystal now had tears in her eyes.
Zoe, being the professional nurse, used some of the supplies left by Eva to bandage Susie's wounds. We quickly laid her on a bed.
I suppressed my complex emotions and called Mandy and the others over to start repairing the damaged wooden door with cold spring water and mud from the cave.
This time, I left a hole in the door for shooting. If the door was completely sealed, I would have to worry about damaging it when shooting outside. This arrangement was much more convenient.
However, this also posed some problems. Cold air constantly seeped in through the hole, making the cave very chilly. But no one complained about the cold. Everyone knew that safety was the top priority right now.
From time to time, I would raise a torch and peek outside to check for any signs of movement. The girls were too scared to sleep alone.
At this point, nobody cared about gender differences. They were all huddled around me, holding on tightly for a sense of security.
Zoe clung to my left arm, resting her head on my shoulder. On my right was Stella. The beautiful girl was always wary of me. If I even touched her, she would call me a pervert all day long. But now, she was hugging me and even pressing her head tightly against my chest.
"I'm only doing this because it's too cold, not because I want to hold you. Don't get any ideas," Stella mumbled, her face red, still trying to put on a brave front.
Mandy was back-to-back with me, resting her head on my back. Crystal also wanted to come closer, but there wasn't any room left. Frustrated, she grabbed my leg and pinched it occasionally, as if trying to provoke me.
Everyone was too tired and scared to notice what Crystal was doing. She grew bolder, moving her hand from my calf up my leg. This woman was fearless. Seeing that I wasn't stopping her, she boldly grabbed my c**k through my pants and gave it a squeeze.
I gasped, arching my back instinctively to conceal my reaction.
"What are you thinking, you pervert? Why are you breathing so heavily?" Stella, lying against my chest, seemed to notice something was off and asked suspiciously.
I pretended not to hear her and even faked a snore.
"Are you asleep?" Stella asked skeptically.
I could feel her gaze. She was probably staring at me warily, so I kept my eyes shut and didn't respond.
"Hmph, bada*s! Even in your sleep, you're not behaving yourself. I wonder what kind of things you're dreaming about!" Stella huffed, but her soft body snuggled closer to me, and she gently held my hand with her delicate fingers.
I felt that this girl wasn't so bad after all. The scent of Stella's perfume calmed me down a lot.
Crystal smiled but didn't show any sign of stopping her antics. She even tried to slide her hand inside my pants.
Suppressing my frustration, I held onto my waistband, preventing her from succeeding. 'What a joke! Why would she try to seduce me while I'm surrounded by all these women?' Even if I wanted to, I couldn't act. Stella alone would probably strangle me in a fit of rage, not to mention Mandy and the others.
I shot Crystal a warning look, and she finally stopped, resting against my thigh with her eyes closed.
But I was still feeling aroused, surrounded by several girls, which was pure torment. I closed my eyes, forcing myself to calm down. After everything that had happened today, I was exhausted, and soon, sleep overtook me.
The next morning, we woke up to a scene no different from usual.
The snow was still falling, and the wind was still blowing. I bravely stepped out of the cave to look around. The fierce wind continued to howl, and the night's snowfall had already covered most of the tracks left behind by the monster.
If it weren't for the disarray in the cave and Susie's severe injuries, it would seem as if the monster had never appeared. Only some faint claw marks remained on a few tree trunks.
A night's sleep hadn't improved Susie's condition. Instead, her condition seemed to worsen. She had developed a fever and was muttering incoherently.
"Zoe, you studied medicine. Do you have any way to treat her wounds?" I anxiously grabbed Zoe's hand and asked.
"I'll do my best to save her, but whether she can be saved... I'm not sure. Susie's wounds are deep. It's very difficult to clean them. Even if she's lucky and the wound doesn't get infected, such a large wound is hard to heal," Zoe said, lowering her head in guilt. "I'm sorry, Zack."
Mandy hugged her, offering comforting words, and I patted Zoe's head, offering my own reassurance. "It's not your fault. We've done everything we can with the resources we have. Now, it's up to her. If she can pull through, she'll be alive. If not, she'll die," I said in a somber tone.
Everyone looked at Susie lying motionless on the bed, and a heavy silence filled the air. This time it was Susie; who knew who it might be next?
"The monster we saw yesterday was likely a carnivorous animal called a thylacoleo. It was a type of marsupial, related to koalas and kangaroos, with a pouch similar to that of a kangaroo, which was one of its distinctive features. These creatures were widespread in Australia thirty thousand years ago but have long been considered extinct," I explained to the group, trying to shift the topic and lift their spirits.
"Of course, the one we saw yesterday might be larger than any thylacoleo known in history. This could be the result of them evolving and growing on this island for thousands of years," I said, unable to shake the unease from thinking about thylacoleo's power and terror.
Eva had mentioned that this island's horrors far exceeded my imagination. At first, I didn't believe her, but now, with the appearance of prehistoric animals thought to be extinct for millennia, I was starting to see her point.
Who knew what other secrets this island held?
