Chapter 63

Although the disaster struck suddenly, we were lucky that the currents near the island, which had previously been a headache for me, pushed the girls back towards the shore. The waves carried the girls towards the beach. Everyone knew how to swim, so no one drowned, but the seawater was extremely cold, sapping everyone's body heat rapidly. The time I had to rescue them was very short! Zoe and Susie were in the worst physical condition. Zoe was short and thin, while Susie had only recovered from a serious injury recently. They both started to struggle after swimming for only a short while. Fortunately, even though I was swimming against the current, I reached them quickly and grabbed them both. Since they could swim, they didn't struggle. My strength allowed me to hold them, and apart from swimming a bit slower, we weren't greatly affected. I saw the others not far away and worried that if I took Zoe and Susie back first, something might happen to the others. So, I shouted, "Everyone, take off your jackets and tie your hands together!" Thankfully, they complied quickly. Holding onto Zoe, I managed to pull everyone back to the shore with my strength. Once we reached the shore, I realized that the girls were all freezing, their lips turning blue. If I hadn't arrived in time, they would have been in real danger. Everyone was soaked and sitting on the shore with faces as white as paper, staring at the turbulent sea with despairing eyes. After rescuing them, I took advantage of my remaining strength to go back into the sea and retrieve the supplies floating on the surface. These were items we had risked our lives for, so even recovering a tenth would be good news. Luckily, I managed to take most of the supplies back. Only then did I notice how bad everyone looked, sitting on the shore waiting for me. I quickly gathered a lot of dry wood nearby and built a bonfire. We all huddled close to the fire, and gradually, their expressions softened. "Everyone, get closer to the fire and take off your wet clothes to dry them. It's so cold; if you catch a chill, it could be serious," I sighed, worried about their health. 'Girls like Susie and Zoe, who were already physically weak, have been further compromised by the cold and the shock. If not treated properly, they are sure to get sick.' Fortunately, we still had some supplies retrieved from the sea, and Zoe started cooking some meat soup over the bonfire. All the wet clothes were placed around the fire to dry. "Let's discuss what happened. What was that huge wave all about? Did anyone see it clearly?" I asked with confusion. When I mentioned this, the girls' moods were noticeably down. "How should I know? Everything was fine when we set sail, and then suddenly there were waves," Crystal said, looking distraught. Tears were streaming down her face. 'Her tears now seemed a hundred times more genuine than the ones on the boat earlier.' "When we were about ten or twenty yards from the shore, I felt the wind change. It was no longer the offshore wind pushing us away," Stella said after carefully recalling the events. Zoe frowned and added, "Yes, around twenty yards from the shore, not only did the wind change, but the water flow felt strange as well, as if there was something under the water." As she spoke, Zoe fearfully huddled closer to me and hugged me, her voice trembling, "It felt like something alive." Everyone gasped at her words. Could there be sea monsters underwater? But after the boat capsized and everyone fell into the water, I didn't see any creatures attacking them. I knew Zoe wouldn't lie, but we couldn't rule out the possibility that she was just imagining things after the scare. Many factors could cause changes in water and wind direction, such as currents, temperature, salinity, terrain, tides, and so on. It was a complex issue that scientists spent their lives studying. We were not experts in this field. We discussed it for a while, but we couldn't figure out the truth. The only thing we knew for sure was that our plan to build a boat and leave the island had failed, and there were huge dangers in the sea! This conclusion was a heavy blow to everyone. For a moment, no one spoke, especially Crystal, who seemed particularly disturbed. For a long time, the idea of building a boat and leaving the island had been our mental support. We managed to endure so many hardships because we all held onto the hope that we would soon be able to leave this place alive. But now, God had mercilessly shattered our last hope. "We'll never be able to go back. We'll be tortured on this island for the rest of our lives. It would have been better to drown in the sea," Zoe said, squatting by the bonfire with her head down, tears falling like rain on the sand. Even Susie and Stella, who were usually close to Zoe, didn't comfort her. They both looked dazed and weren't much better off than Zoe. The beach was incredibly quiet. Only the repetitive sound of the waves and Zoe's low sobs could be heard. A sense of despair was taking root in our hearts. Seeing the girls becoming despondent, I grew anxious. The island's harsh environment meant that if we succumbed to despair, we wouldn't survive long. "Don't be so sad. Our plan to sail away was never guaranteed to succeed. This failure might just be an accident. We can build another boat and choose a different season. We will find a way to leave. Since we got here, there must be a way out," I said, forcing a smile to comfort everyone. 'But will we be able to leave next season? I don't know. This island is too mysterious, and many things that have happened can't be explained scientifically.' For now, we desperately needed hope, a goal, and motivation to survive. Of course, I believed there must be a way to leave the island. Eva's father, the German explorer who left her his notes, had visited the island and left successfully. Eva had suggested building the small boat, so we must have made a mistake somewhere, although I couldn't figure out what it was. Seeing my optimism, the girls, despite their sadness, forced themselves to believe in me out of a survival instinct. Noticing their slightly improved mood, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. Only then did I realize that the girls were all sitting by the bonfire in their underwear, which made for quite a tantalizing scene. Stella, usually cautious around me, had a body I rarely saw. Now, seeing it, I was momentarily stunned. I jokingly said, "Stella, you have a great figure." Stella blushed slightly but still managed to glare at me calmly. "What does it have to do with you?" "Oh?" I smiled, stroking my chin and raising an eyebrow at her. "I just recalled something. Who was it that came to find me last night and said..." Before I could finish, Stella stood up angrily. "Shut up! I didn't say anything to you!" Seeing her blush and glare at me only made me want to tease her more. I dragged out my words deliberately, "Stella, you must have a bad memory. I remember everything clearly. Should I remind you?" Stella screamed and rushed at me, warning, "You pervert! If you dare say anything, I won't forgive you!" Unexpectedly, as Stella charged at me, she slipped and fell onto me. She was only wearing a bra, and my face ended up buried in her alluring cleavage.
