The last time I saw my daughter, Amy, her eyes were swollen from crying, her hands clutching that worn-out teddy bear I bought her on her fifth birthday. I still remember the way she looked at me when I left… as if she already knew her father was a monster.
Now, years later, I sit in the back of a black sedan, fingers tapping restlessly against my thigh. “Have you managed to find any information about my Amy?” My voice comes out rougher than I intend, betraying the ache sitting somewhere between guilt and obsession.
Joyce, my assistant, adjusts her glasses nervously. “I don’t have full information yet, sir. But… I did come across her name in a registry from Gem’s City. It wasn’t much, but I thought it was a lead.”
“Then that’s where we start,” I say sharply.
