“Oh my God, she seems to be an heiress, but actually she is a thief,” a blonde girl says, lifting her glass of wine with a smug little smirk, her words loud enough for half the hall to hear. There’s a look of distaste on her face as though simply being in the same room as me offends her. A few gasps ripple through the crowd and the whispers begin spreading like wildfire. My stomach twists but I straighten my shoulders and keep my head high. “Kael, I would never steal,” I murmur under my breath, clutching his hand lightly. Before I can fully prepare myself for his reaction, Kael wraps his much larger hand firmly over mine. The warmth of his grip sends a strange wave of calm through me, my heart leaping just a little. Chad would never have done this for me, not in front of so many people.
