The Alpha Watches

1627 Words
"You're late, Alpha." The priestess doesn't look surprised. Doesn't even look up from the cords binding Liora's wrists to three warriors who've gone absolutely still. Aurelian steps into the moonlight and Liora forgets how to breathe. Three days since the rejection. Three days since she watched him stand on the dais beside Seraphine and declare her unworthy. He looks exactly the same. Devastatingly handsome in that brutal way. Silver threading black hair. Dark eyes that have killed and led and never apologized for either. And he looks completely different. Because now she can feel him through the mate bond without walls or distance. Feel his rage. His control is fracturing. His… Pain. So much pain that it makes her chest ache. "Continue the ceremony." His voice carries absolute authority. "I'm merely observing." Observing. Like he's watching a training exercise instead of his fated mate being bound to other men. The priestess inclines her head. "As you wish." She turns back to Liora. To the warriors standing in their triangle formation with silver cords connecting them all. "The binding is nearly complete." Her fog-colored eyes find Liora's. "One final question: Do you accept this bond freely, knowing it cannot be broken except through death or unanimous dissolution?" Freely. That word again. Liora opens her mouth. "She already answered." Kieran's voice cuts in. Sharp. Challenging. "Or are we performing the ritual twice for the Alpha's benefit?" The priestess's expression doesn't change. "The Alpha's presence requires reconfirmation. Pack law." "Convenient law." Kieran doesn't look at Aurelian. Doesn't acknowledge him at all. "Written by Alphas who wanted control over omega bindings." "Kieran." Caelan's damaged voice holds a warning. "What? We're supposed to pretend he's not…" "Yes." Riven's quiet interruption was somehow louder than Kieran's anger. "We pretend. We finish this. Then we deal with consequences." Liora feels Aurelian's attention like physical weight. Not on the warriors. On her. She doesn't look at him. Can't. If she looks, she'll break. "I accept." Her voice comes out steadier than she expected. "Freely. Knowing the terms." The priestess nods. Begins chanting in the old language. Words Liora doesn't understand but feels anyway. Power is building in the air. In the cords around her wrists. In the bonds already forming in her chest. Magic rises like a tide. The cords burn. Not painful. Just hot. Searing. Branding her skin with symbols that glow silver-white. Caelan's hand settles on her shoulder. Massive. Burning hot through thin white fabric. Possession without asking permission. His scarred throat works. She feels his reaction through the bond, surprise, confusion, something that might be wonder. Kieran's fingers brush her inner wrist. Testing her pulse maybe. Or just touching because he can now. The contact sends electricity up her arm that has nothing to do with magic. His golden eyes meet hers. Hold. Something intense passes between them that Liora can't name. Riven doesn't touch. Just stands there utterly still, watching her face. Tracking every micro-expression. But she feels him anyway through the bond that's locking into place. Deep. Quiet. Profound. The priestess's chanting reaches a crescendo. Magic seals. The bonds in Liora's chest solidify completely. Four distinct connections, each with a different flavor: Aurelian burns white-hot. Desperate. Consuming. Caelan radiates steady warmth. Protective. Grounding. Kieran sparks electric. Challenging. Alive. Riven flows like deep water. Calm. Endless. Not diluted. Not weakened. Expanded. The mate bond didn't fragment. It multiplied. Wove through the new connections like invasive vines until everything tangled together. This wasn't supposed to happen. The Council said dilution. Weakening. Manageable background noise. This is the opposite. This is… "It's done." The priestess lowers her hands. The cords around Liora's wrists dissolve into silver smoke. Leave behind marks that glow faintly on her skin. "The binding is complete. Witnessed by the Goddess and recorded in sacred law." Silence falls. Caelan's hand stays on Liora's shoulder. Kieran's fingers remain at her wrist. Riven finally moves. Steps closer. Creates a wall between her and… Aurelian. The Alpha hasn't moved since entering the clearing. Just stands there in the moonlight watching. His expression reveals nothing. But through the bond, Liora feels everything. Rage. Jealousy. Hunger. Regret. So much regret it tastes like blood. "You may leave." The priestess tells the warriors. "Take your omega. The ceremony requires no further witness." Your omega. The possessive lands strangely. Liora isn't sure whose omega she is anymore. Caelan starts to turn. To lead her away from the clearing. "Wait." Aurelian's voice stops them all cold. He moves then. Finally. Crosses the clearing with predator grace that makes Liora's wolf whimper. The warriors tense. Riven shifts position. Puts himself more directly between Liora and the approaching Alpha. Kieran's hand on her wrist tightens fractionally. Caelan doesn't move. Just radiates warning through sheer presence. Aurelian stops three feet away. Close enough that Liora can smell him. Cedar and smoke and something darker underneath. Close enough that the mate bond roars to life with intensity that steals her breath. His dark eyes find hers. Hold. For the first time since the crowning ceremony. For the first time since he declared her unworthy in front of the entire pack. There's no public cruelty now. No political calculation. Just raw hunger that makes heat crawl up her neck despite everything. And underneath it… Regret. So much regret she can taste it through the bond. "Liora." Her name in his voice does things it shouldn't. "I need…" "You need to step back, Alpha." Kieran's tone stays respectful. Barely. "The ceremony's complete. She's bound. Pack law protects multi-bond configurations from interference." "I'm not interfering." "Aren't you?" Tension thickens. The priestess watches from the clearing's edge. Not intervening. Just bearing witness. Aurelian's jaw tightens. "I merely wish to speak with her. Alone." "No." Riven's quiet voice. "No?" Aurelian's attention swings to him. Dangerous. "You're refusing your Alpha's direct request?" "I'm protecting our omega from unwanted attention." Riven doesn't flinch. "That's our duty now. Our right." Our omega. The words settle strangely in Liora's chest. Through the bond, she feels Aurelian's control fracture. Just for a moment. Feels the rage beneath his careful mask. "She can speak for herself." He looks back at Liora. "Can't you?" Can she? Three days ago he destroyed her publicly. Made her pack shame. Reduced her to biology and unfortunate timing. And now he wants to speak with her alone? "What could you possibly have to say?" Her voice shakes. She forces it steadily. "That you haven't already made clear?" His expression tightens. "You don't understand…" "I understand perfectly." The words taste like ash. "You rejected me. Arranged this binding. Watched while they…" She gestures at the warriors. At the marks glowing on her wrists. "While they made me theirs instead of yours. What's left to say?" "Everything." His voice goes rough. "There's everything left to say." "Then say it." Kieran challenges. "Right here. In front of witnesses. Say what you couldn't say three days ago when it mattered." Aurelian's hands curl into fists. Through the bond, Liora feels him warring with himself. Duty versus desire. Control versus confession. Duty wins. It always wins with him. "This was necessary." He says finally. Each word carefully. Controlled. "To protect you. To keep you alive. Everything I did…" "Was it for my benefit?" Liora laughs. It sounds broken. "You humiliated me for my benefit? Gave me to other men for my benefit? Tell me, Alpha…how exactly does public rejection and forced binding protect me?" "You don't know what you're talking about." "Then explain." Silence stretches. The moon climbs higher. Aurelian's jaw works. She can see him fighting the words. Fighting the truth he won't speak. Finally: "I can't." "Can't?" Her voice rises. "Or won't?" "Does it matter?" "Yes." She steps forward. The warriors tense but don't stop her. "It matters. You don't get to destroy my life and then claim it was for my protection without explaining how." "Liora…" Her name again. Softer. "Please. Trust that I…" "Trust you?" The words explode out. "You want me to trust you? After everything?" "Yes." The simple answer cracks something in her chest. He steps closer. The warriors shift. Ready to intervene. But Aurelian ignores them completely. Focuses on Liora with intensity that makes her knees weak. Close enough now that only she hears when he speaks: "You think this saves you?" The question lands like a blade between her ribs. What kind of… "You tell me, Alpha." Her voice trembles. She forces it steadily. "You arranged it." His jaw tightens. "This changes nothing." "Nothing?" She gestures at the marks on her wrists. At the warriors surrounding her. At the bonds burning in her chest. "I'm bound to three men who aren't you. How does that change nothing?" "Because you're still mine." His voice drops. Dangerous. Possessive. "The mate bond doesn't care about ceremony or pack law or political arrangements. You feel it, don't you? Right now. Pulling you toward me despite everything." She does. God help her, she does. The bond burns hotter than all three warrior connections combined. Demanding. Insistent. Unbreakable. "Feeling and choosing aren't the same thing." She throws Kieran's words from earlier back at him. "You taught me that. Three days ago when you chose duty over…" "Don't." His hand lifts. Stops just short of touching her face. "Don't finish that sentence." "Why not? Afraid of the truth?" "Afraid of what I'll do if you say it out loud." The confession hangs between them. His hand trembles. Still not touching. But so close she can feel the heat. Through the bond, his control is shredding. She feels desire, rage, and desperation bleeding through. "This changes nothing." He repeats. But his voice shakes now. "You're theirs by law. Mine by…" He stops. Doesn't finish. But the mate bond surges violently between them. "Liar."
