Chapter seven
THE CANADIAN NORTH — SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1410 HOURS (1610 EST)The operational training center for pilots and the ground crew of the RCAF and the USAF was a giant complex 170 miles north of Yellowknife. Hidden deep inside the tree line of the Northwest Territories, it was a city in the middle of nowhere. It contained multiple runways varying in length from eight thousand feet to eleven thousand feet. It had a larger than normal control tower with the latest in radar and electronic equipment. It had numerous hangars, garages, armament and machine shops. It had two-story houses for the officers and barracks for the ranks. It also had two enormous mess halls and, in the middle of the complex, a three-story structure called the administration building.
