SOUTH OF TUNDRA ONE, NWT — 0855 HOURS (1055 EST)Claire was confused. “You mean to tell me we don’t have to pay a cent for this trip?”
“That’s right. We’re on assignment,” Ben Spencer told his wife.
“You sure as hell picked the sticks.”
Spencer shrugged. “I know. But what do you want for free?”
“And I thought you said it was going to be some romantic weekend getaway.”
“It is. Sort of.”
“You lied.” Claire sat and finished her sandwich. She was hungry after the all-night flight. She glanced across at the calm lake and its scenic, rocky shoreline. “I hope it gets more exciting than this.”
“It will,” he promised. “It definitely will.”
