The Uncle's offer

2073 Words
That night, Eden tossed and turned restlessly. Her mind raced with thoughts of the kiss and her uncle's offer. Not wanting to think about the kiss and her feelings surrounding it she tried to distract herself by wondering if uncle Mike had really meant what he'd said. He had money, plenty of it, and no kids of his own. Mike was her dad's younger brother by 15 years and was the surprise baby to their parents. He had made his fortune with a computer software business he had set up his parents garage along with his best friend when they were just 15. Curiosity got the better of Eden and she researched the company, she nearly passed out when she discovered it was worth 20 million. She allowed herself to fantasise about being able to join Constance at her school but sleep would still not come. There was always one thing that never failed to help with sleep and, as her hand travelled south, thoughts of the kiss crept into her head. She decided to bring it up with her parents at breakfast, the school thing not the kiss, they didn't need to know about that. She blushed even thinking about her parents knowing about it. What would they think? They were pretty conservative and always shied away from talking about anything s****l or personal with Eden. Her dad was more open to things than her mum, who worried a little too much about what other people might think of them. Eden pushed her food around wondering how to broach the subject. "Uncle Mike said he would pay for me to go to Saint Agatha's" she just shouted out to be heard over the twins whilst trying to dodge food thrown by Jess. "Eden it was very rude of you to bring that up last night. Uncle Mike was just being nice and you put him in an awkward position" Mum replied "he spoils you kids enough with all the expensive gifts, it makes us feel bad doesn't it honey?" Dad just replied with an ambiguous hmmm, he couldn't care less he just wanted a quiet life. "But Mum, he doesn't mind. He said he would see what he could do" "Don't push this, I don't want you to bring it up with your uncle again, or at all for that matter, and no mooching off your uncle he buys you enough. He said he would buy you a car, it will probably be better than any we ever have and..." she carried on ranting as she walked out the room to change Jess. She was bitter that he spoiled her children and not her, truth was Mike didn't really like her much as he thought she was too bossy to Dad but that's just the way Dad liked his women. Later that evening, Eden was struggling to sleep again. She could hear the low rumble of her dad's voice, he was talking to someone on the phone, and then a little while later she heard her mum and dad having a hushed argument. She crept down the stairs silently, something she had mastered some years previous, and listened in. Her mum was crying softly, "I just don't want to lose her" Eden heard her mother say. "You aren't losing her" her father comforted. Eden crept back upstairs as she didn't want to push her luck. What were they talking about? Was grandma dying? Downstairs the conversation continued "think of the doors it will open for her. She could go to sixth form there too and then any uni she wants. You know if you love them let them go". The next morning Eden sat down for breakfast and found both her parents grinning at her like Cheshire cats. "What? I swear to God if those brats have drawn on my face again I'll kill them" it had happened once, "no sweetie there's nothing on your face sit back down we've got some news" Dad said. Judging by their smiles, she guessed it wasn't that grandma was dying. Unless they had some multi million pound insurance policy out on her, but her parents wouldn't be that callous. "You can go to St Agatha's" Mum blurted out. Dad was annoyed, he wanted to be the one to tell his daughter but making his girl happy was the main thing. Eden squealed in delight "Thanks Mum, thanks Dad" and she flung her arms around her dad and kissed his cheek, she knew it was him who had made it happen, well him and uncle Mike. "It's your uncle you have to thank, he rang last night and offered to pay for you to attend right through sixth form. We are just waiting for confirmation of your place and you should be able to start in September" Dad told Eden. "We better get a uniform sorted hadn't we" added Mum "oh I'm so glad I haven't got round to getting your uniform yet, I would've had to return it all". She didn't want to tell Connie yet, she had been avoiding talking to her. It had been a day and a half now though and she couldn't put it off much longer. What should she do? Talk about it or pretend it didn't happen. She didn't have much time to think about it as that evening Connie burst into her room and threw herself on the bed then threw the pillow at Eden. "Hey b***h what we gunna do tonight? Wanna make out some more?" and she stuck her tongue out and wiggled it around in an exaggerated snogging motion. Eden tossed the pillow back at her "Guess what!" she baited Connie "erm, you're gay?" Connie guessed. Eden blushed " nooo, but, you know I went out for that meal the other day, with my uncle? Well, he's offered to pay for my tuition and my parents have agreed to let me go" Connie's eyes widened when she realised what her friend was on about and they both jumped around the room cheering. "this calls for a celebration" Connie shouted and produced 2 small wine bottles from her bag " what the hell Con, where did you get those?" "Ty got them for us, now he's 18 he can get us drinks but he said only small amounts and don't tell anyone or his ass would be on the line " Ty was Connie's older brother and Eden thought that was pretty sweet of him as he usuly just teased them. They drank the wine quickly and secretly in Eden's room chasing it down with mints to hide the smell. "What shall we do with the bottles?" worried Eden " I can't put them in with the house recycling, my parents will see them" " let's go for a walk and dump them in someone else's recycling" suggested Connie. So off they went giggling along the way. It was late summer and still light outside and the girls had a 10pm cerfew but there was very little to do in the village at their age so they just wandered the neighbourhood holding hands and making plans for the rest of the holiday. They walked to the local shops to get some sweets but as they neared they could smell cannabis in the air. The area was plagued by some unruly chavs who liked to hang around and pick on the local kids and smoke weed or graffiti walls but that was as bad as it got. Crime rates were low and the population was mostly made up of elderly people as the area had gotten too expensive for younger families to buy houses in. The schools had such small numbers that all the local children knew each other, which could be hell. Eden often got picked on for going on a student exchange trip to France in the first year of shool for a whole term. It was an amazing experience and Eden had really reinvented herself over there and had come out of her shell so much. She couldn't wait to come back and make new friends and try new things. Jess was born just a week after Eden had returned from France and Eden loved taking her out for walks in her pram and giving her mum a break. An older girl from school, Kate, once saw her and came over to coo over the baby. She bombarded Eden with questions and made baby faces and noises at Jess. It was sweet, Kate acted stuck up at school and had been mean to Eden on occasion but maybe they could be friends. Maybe Jess would be a good tool for making friends, everyone loves a cute baby and Jess rarely made a fuss about anything. Her optimism was short lived as in the weeks that followed rumours had spread around school that Jess was Eden's baby and any boy that dared talk to her was named as the father. Eden was so done with these small minded idiots at her school. As the two girls neared the shop they encountered a group of 3 boys from the school. One was in their year and the other 2 were in Tyler's year. They homed in on Connie straight away "yo Connie baby where ya bin hiding hot stuff" one of the older lads shouted to her. "Nah bro, her bin at that fancy girls school innit" the younger one shouted "so what has it turned you gay and all now or summat?" he added, noticing the hand holding. "Schools don't turn girls gay, guys like you do!" spat Connie, she didn't take s**t from anyone, "And speaking of school you could do with paying more attention in English as your use of the language is atrocious" she added and stormed off into the shop dragging Eden with her. Eden was horrified "Why do you have to antagonise them? What if they start on us when we go back out?" "relax hun. What are they gunna do? Ty would kick their asses". It was true and Eden felt herself relax when she remembered she wouldn't have to see them again at school. They picked their sweets, paid and exited the shop. It was getting cold out and, feeling a confidence fuelled by the wine, Eden reached out for Connie's hand. This ilicited scoffs and a call of "Dykes" from the two boys who had mouthed off earlier. "Yeah, and proud" shouted Eden and it was Connie's turn to be shocked as Eden grabbed her and kissed her right in front of them then ran off. Connie was left just as stunned as the boys and it took her a moment to start after her. After the girls had ran off, the third lad, Brad, who had remained quiet the whole time turned on the other two. "What the hell guys? Those gals are 14 for f**k's sake! Show some respect to women whatever their age. I'm done with you guys I'm going home" and he stormed off. He followed the sound of the girls and stalked them home. He recognised Ty's sister and had noticed the attention she drew from boys and men alike, oh and apparently girls too now. He'd moved to the village with his family 2 years prior and Ty had been a good friend to him in that time. His family had moved to escape the bad memories his home town held for them after his older sister had been abducted off the street and murdered by a family "friend". He always felt he could've looked after her had he been born first and even recognized the irrationality of it but he couldn't help feeling that way. Acting as an older brother and looking out for the local children gave him some comfort and a purpose. He made sure that the girls got home safely, accidently bearing witness to the duo sharing another passionate kiss on the way. Brad felt embarrassed and guillty realising how wrong it would look if someone saw him following young girls home. As he turned to leave he found himself face to face with a tall, pale faced lady who pulled him towards her and bit him painfully on the neck causing the young man to pass out in shock. The lady caught him, hoisted him into her arms and carried him off easily into the night.
