DIANA Axel stood still for a second after I asked him why he was back home from work so early. His expression didn’t change much, but I saw something flicker in his eyes. Maybe it was hesitation or something close to that. I couldn’t really tell, but I waited patiently, not wanting to rush him. Then he said, “I forgot something at home. That’s what I came to pick up.” I nodded slowly, accepting his answer. I didn’t ask what he forgot. I figured if it was something important, he would have already told me.
