I nodded slowly, looking at Maxine. “You can tell me the secret,” I said, even though a small part of me already felt nervous.
She smiled like she’d been waiting for me to say that. Then she leaned closer like we were sharing something really private.
“I did a spell,” she said softly, her voice calm like she was just telling me something casual. “A spell that would make me not find my mate.”
My eyes widened. I sat up straighter, completely shocked. “You did what?”
Maxine laughed a little, like my reaction amused her. “Relax, it’s not as serious as you think.”
“But… why would you do something like that?” I asked, still trying to understand.
My heart was racing a little, and I didn’t even know why.
