PART 4
Gigi was doing the moon walk to Michael Jackson’s dance video. Her friends were clapping and laughing. They were watching MTV. Gigi stopped for a bit to catch her breath, “Guys, I love you very much. But I have to go. I’m leaving.” Her friends blinked and looked at each other.
One of the girls asked, “Where are you going?”
Gigi looked at the screen. The Van Halen band came up. She pointed and said, “There . . . the country of Rock-N-Roll!”
“You know we can never really blend within American society.” A Chinese classmate was chatting with Gigi at the campus in Houston.
Gigi stared at her and didn’t know what to say. “Why not? What are we supposed to do? Clanning as a Chinese society in an American world?”
“Gigi can never change that accent.” The speech instructor told the class
