Selene woke to darkness not the comforting kind, not the temporary shadow of night. This was darkness that swallowed sound, swallowed light, swallowed hope. She tried to move slowly, carefully but her wrists burned. Bound. Her breath hitched as pain shot through her shoulder. And then she realized she was alone. Or so she thought. A faint click echoed in the room. A soft shuffle. And then a light dim, but enough to pierce the blackness revealed him. The man from the vehicle. Calm. Composed. Watching. Selene didn’t flinch.
