episode 13: The Thread That Binds

772 Words
The sky was dipped in a shade of bruised blue, like it had been holding back tears just as much as Han Eun-bi had been. She sat near the rooftop railings of the school building, legs crossed, hands quietly resting on her knees. Below her, the city buzzed with its normal chaos, unaware of the war waging in her heart. After what had happened in the music room, she hadn’t dared face Shin Ji-hwan. She’d avoided the hallways he walked through. She skipped the class where they usually sat together. She even switched her lunch spot. But even in that silence… his absence screamed louder than the presence of anyone else. It had been three days. Three days since her voice cracked in front of him. Three days since she saw the fire of protectiveness in his eyes when he had said, “You’re not alone. Not anymore.” And now, all she could think was… why does it hurt more to run away from him than it ever did facing the entire school? Suddenly, the heavy silence was cut by footsteps. Slow, firm… familiar. She didn’t need to look up to know who it was. “I thought I might find you here,” Shin Ji-hwan’s voice was soft, almost careful. Eun-bi’s fingers gripped the hem of her skirt tightly. “I didn’t expect you to come.” He walked over and leaned against the rail beside her, looking out toward the horizon. “Why are you hiding from me?” he asked, his voice not accusing—just broken. Eun-bi closed her eyes. “I wasn’t hiding,” she whispered. “You skipped four classes, changed your lunch spot, and ignored all my texts.” “…Maybe I was hiding,” she admitted, letting a small breath escape. Ji-hwan turned to her then, kneeling beside her like she was something fragile—something he didn’t want to shatter with sudden moves. “I didn’t mean to scare you off, Eun-bi. That day… I just wanted you to know that I care.” Her throat tightened. “That’s what scares me.” He blinked. “What?” “I’ve spent my whole life being treated like background noise. Like a shadow people can’t wait to forget. And then you came along… and for the first time, someone actually heard me.” She looked at him now, tears glistening in the corners of her eyes. “I don’t know how to handle that kind of light, Ji-hwan.” He didn’t speak. He just reached out and gently held her hand. “You don’t have to handle it alone,” he said. “Let me share it with you.” Her lips trembled. “Why are you so kind to me?” “Because when I look at you, Eun-bi, I see someone brave. I see someone who deserves more than just surviving.” A tear slipped down her cheek. He wiped it away with his thumb. “You think you’re just a shadow,” he continued, “but to me, you’ve become my anchor. The only real thing in this fake school, in this fake life.” A gust of wind passed between them, carrying away the silence that once hung heavy. And just like that, Eun-bi cracked. She leaned forward and buried her face into his shoulder, her walls finally crumbling, piece by fragile piece. “I don’t want to run anymore,” she whispered into his jacket. “Then stay,” he whispered back. “Just stay.” --- Later that evening, Eun-bi sat on her bed, staring at her phone. There were twenty unread messages in the group chat. Rumors spreading like wildfire. Some had already posted blurry pictures of her and Ji-hwan on the rooftop. She sighed. Let them talk. For the first time, she wasn’t afraid of being seen. --- But peace is a fragile thing. And it never lasts long. --- The next day at school, the corridors buzzed with a different kind of energy. People stared at her—not with the usual mockery—but with a mix of confusion and curiosity. But what sent chills down her spine was the moment a new transfer student entered the classroom. He was tall, with sharp eyes and a smile that never reached them. He walked in like he owned the air around him. The teacher introduced him: “Class, this is Min Seo-jun. He just transferred from Tokyo.” Eun-bi’s heart skipped. Ji-hwan’s eyes narrowed. And Seo-jun… smiled directly at her. “I think we’ve met before, haven’t we, Eun-bi?” --- [TO BE CONTINUED…]
