“Hey. Thanks for coming,” I say to the pretty brunette sitting down across the booth from me.
She sips her water glass, then glares at me crossly. Reminds me of my mother. She’s just waiting for me to confess to my crimes before she doles out her punishment, all the while knowing that her silence is half the punishment already.
“I know, I know. I’ve been a bad boy. I’m sorry, J,” I admit.
She raises her eyebrow at me. “Really? J?”
“Ah, come on! What’s the use of having a best friend if you can’t get under his skin once in a while?” I ask.
“Eric’s not even here. It’s just you and me, Clay.”
She’s got me there. “Fine. How are you, Jenny Lynn?”
