CHAPTER 3 - UNEXPECTED ALLY - CASSIA'S POV

2038 Words
I ran all night. My legs burned, and when I heard troops behind me, I pushed myself faster. Survival meant moving forward, even when it felt like there was no point. I just needed to get away from this pack, even if I found the same kind of monsters everywhere. My breath came in ragged gasps. I was tired, so tired, and when it began to rain, I truly started to think the Goddess hated me. I ran to the nearest cliff, to explore the area, perhaps there was a pack nearby where I could hide, but as I was looking, the ground gave way, and I tumbled down down the cliff. It was a steep slide, and I hit the bottom hard. Smashing my head against the the ground. My head throbbed, and everything started to faze in and out of darkness. I had to find shelter before I passed out, and fortunately there was a cave nearby, thanks to enhanced scent. I knew there were any threats inside, and I walked in. I didn't bother to shift, I just curled up and succumbed to my head injury. When I woke up, I was still in my Lycan form, and there was a fire going, and a large dress, twice my size was folded next to me. I sniffed the air, but couldn't smell anything. ''Sera, do you sense anything?'' ''I.. I think an Alpha is nearby.'' ''And Alpha?'' I started to panic. ''Calm down, if it was Aamon or his father, we'd already be dead.'' I quickly shifted, and pulled on the white dress that smelt of flowers, and tied the side, so it was more form-fitting, and looked around the cave. ''HELLO?!'' A few seconds later, a man came in from the rain, and pulled down his hood, but I stepped back in fear, it was the Kings brother, Prince Tolen. ''Please don't be afraid, I'm not like my family.'' ''Bullsh*t!'' I growled as my claws came out. ''I am not!'' He bowed before me, ''I am sorry for my foolish nephew, he shouldn't have rejected you.'' ''GET UP!'' I shouted, ''You're only being kind to me because you know I'm a white Lycan, otherwise you'd hurt me like everyone else!'' ''Hurt you? What are you talking about?'' He asked, his voice worried, as he stood up, and my stomach growled. ''Oh, I'm cooking a rabbit,'' He pointed to the fire, ''You're welcome to it.'' I frowned again. No one had cooked for me since my mother died, maybe he'd poisoned it to take me back. I stepped back and shook my head. ''I'm not going back to that hell. I will kill you if you even try.'' ''I'm not taking you back, in fact, I'm going to help you get out.'' ''Why?'' ''I was asked to help find you.'' ''Fine me? Who asked you?'' ''King Greyson.'' ''Why would he want you to find me?'' ''It's best if he explains that to you, but I promise you, he won't hurt you.'' ''Pfft,'' I exhaled in disbelief, ''Yeah, I'm sure, I've heard that before.'' ''What happened to you in my brothers pack?'' He asked, as his eyes ran over my scared body, and I felt exposed. ''What? Your brother never told you about the packs punching bag?'' Tolen frowned, as he slowly sat down by the fire, and pulled out a knife but I stepped back. ''Easy, I'm just cutting the rabbit,'' He assured me, ''Please tell me about my brother and his pack. You see. I was meant to be King, but after I lost my first mate, I went... mad. I guess is a good word for it, and gave up the throne, but no one's told me anything bad about him.'' ''That's because they're all just as evil.'' ''Please sit and eat, and tell me everything, please.'' ''I won't eat anything you've cooked.'' ''I haven't done anything to it, I swear,'' He told me as he ate some of the rabbit, before cutting off another piece, ''Here.'' I wanted to ignore it, but my stomach growled again, so I timidly reached out, my hand shaking in fear as I took the rabbit, and quickly stepped back again. I gave the rabbit a sniff, before popping it into my mouth. ''Thank you.'' ''You're welcome,'' He smiled, and cut another piece for me, ''Please sit.'' I frowned again, but sat down opposite him, and took the extended piece of rabbit, chewing it slowly. ''Please tell me about my brother and the pack.'' For the first time in my life, I told someone about the extent of the abuse I'd been through, and Tolen stared at the fire, his hands clenched into fists on his lap, his breathing labored. ''And my brother was aware of this?'' ''Your brother helped.'' I pointed out. ''I'm so sorry, child.'' ''Don't be, you're all like it. I'm used to it.'' ''No, we're not all like it!'' He harked up, ''What they did to you was mosterous, and I will make sure they pay.'' ''Aamon's taking the throne soon, and he's got a large following of men just like him,'' I pointed out, ''No one can make him pay. I just need to get away from him, from my father. From that f*cking pack.'' ''Like I said, I'm going to get you out, you'll go with King Greyson, and he'll keep you safe.'' He told me, ''The trip to his country takes a full month, but once you're there, Aamon, my brother, your father, none of them could touch you.'' ''So Greyson wants to use me because he saw that I was white, is that it?'' ''He doesn't want to use you, and he'll never hurt you. But I really can't say more than that.'' He told me, ''Will you agree to go?'' I thought it over, I didn't want to stay here, and if Aamon would never find me if I went overseas. I could reach Greysons country and run. And if he tried to hurt me during the passage to his country. I could just jump over board. I'd never been taught to swim, and I'd rather drown then continue living as I have been. ''I agree to at least meet this King Greyson, and I'll decide from there.'' I said, despite already deciding to go. Tolen smiled and cut some more rabbit, ''Good, that's good. We'll meet up with him tomorrow once you've had more to eat and a proper rest.'' He said as he looked out at the rain, ''Hopefully this storm will be over by then.'' I nodded wearily, as he turned back, cut more rabbit and gave it to me. ''Thank you.'' I said as I took the rabbit. ''How did you know I was here?'' ''You've run into my territory. It was easy enough to follow your scent to the cave, but when I arrived you were injured, so I sent my Beta to get you a dress, while I waited for you to heal. He actually stole this dress from someone's clothes line. I have no clue who it belongs to,'' He laughed, ''But he's preparing some outfits for you, they'll be ready by the time we make it to my pack.'' ''Okay,'' I said, my eyes still watching his every movement, a habit I'd picked up from childhood. ''May I ask your Lycan's name?'' ''Seraphina, Sera.'' ''Lovely,'' He smiled, ''My Lycan is Alaric, he's very honored to meet you. We weren't alive during the last white Lycan's rule.'' ''We're not ruling anything. I just want to live away from everyone, somewhere safe.'' ''Greyson will see you're safe.'' He told me, and I frowned again. Why was this Greyson so important to Tolen? I was tired. So tired. My head still ached, but I was to afraid to sleep near the Alpha. ''We've already slept near him, and nothing happened to us,'' Sera pointed out, ''I like him, he's nice.'' "You should rest," Tolen said, as he looked at me, trying to keep my eyes open. "You are safe here. In the morning, I will take you to my pack." I slowly laid down, but continued to watch him, as he laid down on the other side of the fire, and closed his eyes. Sleep did not come easily. My mind raced. I wondered what tomorrow would bring. I hadn't had a chance to even come to terms with what I'd been through. That pig Aamon was my mate, I'd been rejected. I'd run from my home, not that it ever felt like a home to me, and now I was going overseas. My head wouldn't stop spinning. The first light of dawn filled the cave, and I stirred. Jumping in fright as I'd forgotten where I was. The Alpha was already awake. He was sitting by the fire, waiting patiently. "I was going to give you a few more hours of sleep, but seeing as you're awake, are you ready to go?" He asked, and I nodded cautiously. We walked in silence for the next two hours. He suggested shifting, but I didn't want more people to see Sera was a white Lycan. The path wound through tall trees, over bridges and down a river. Birds chirped. The air smelled fresh. The Alpha moved with ease, as he led the way, and I followed, jumping at the slightest noise in this unfamiliar territory. My fatigue lessened with the morning air, but was replaced with a sense of nervous anticipation instead. We reached a clearing. It was not what I expected. It wasn't some major city like my old pack. It was a small beautiful village covered in moss and gardens overflowing with flowers. Laughter drifted on the breeze despite the early hour, and the smell of fresh baked goods swam around me. Men and women were everywhere. They were weaving baskets for fishing. They were filling benches with bread, and cakes. They were talking animatedly. The Alpha smiled at me. "Welcome to my pack. We are the Nightshades Pack." My jaw dropped. ''It's lovely, like nothing I've ever seen.'' Everyone paused and stared at us as we walked past, waving to their Alpha, and eyeing me with interest, as he led me towards a massive cabin in the middle of the village. ''This is my home, it's technically the pack house,'' He told me, as we walked past two men posted outside. When we walked inside, a beautiful older women came running over to us in her rob, ''Tolen, you're home!'' She hugged him, and then punched his arm, ''Bradley said you were spending the night in a cave with a young lady, explain yourself!'' I actually smiled at her comment. Tolen turned to me, ''This is Clara, my second chance mate," He told me. "Clara my love, this is Cassia. LENA!'' A middle-aged women came over, pulling on an apron. ''Yes, Alpha?'' ''This is Cassia, please take her to the spare room, and draw her a bath, Brad, should have dropped off some clothing for her.'' ''He did, I put it in the room.'' ''And is Greyson here yet?'' ''He arrived last night, but he was very agitated. What's going on?'' His mate asked. ''We will talk in private,'' He kissed her cheek, making my heart ache. I'd never be loved like that. ''Cassia please go with Lena, don't be afraid.'' I looked at her nervously, but nodded, and started to follow the woman toward the back of the house, where she showed me a room with more furniture than I was even used to. She continued int the bathroom and I watched as she turned the faucet. The water flowed, filling the tub, and she turned to me, ''Are there any scents you like? We have loads.'' ''Scents?'' She smiled and walked over to a bench and pointed to several bottles, ''Do you like any of these?' I sniffed and nodded, ''These two.'' She picked up the vanilla and sandlewood bottles, and poured some into the tub. ''Just turn the water off when it's hot enough and the clothes are on the bed.'' ''Thank you.'' I smiled at her as she left, and closed the wooden door, leaving me alone.
