The troop was in a column of fours moving south as the sun began to rise. Crow said to Stump, “Keep em headed south. You"re in charge until I return.” Before Stump could reply, Crow put his horse into a gallop and rode away.
The troop had been on the move for two hours when Stump saw Crow standing in his stirrups, waving his hat over his head. Stump turned the column and headed in Crow"s direction. They found Crow standing by a stream under some large trees. “Have the men dismount. Picket the horses between those trees by the stream. Have the men build cooking fires, four men to a fire.”
Half an hour later, the smell of wood smoke filled the air. Crow called out, “Have we any butchers or hunters here?”
