It was dark when Stump awoke to find that Crow was gone. Neatly stacked where he had been sleeping were his saddle and boots. Stump lay back down, "Nothing I can do about it." Crow rode bareback in the moonlit night. He carried two pistols in his belt and wore moccasins on his feet. Crow had ridden for about two hours, when he stopped his mount and sniffed the air; wood smoke. He moved forward until he heard voices. He tied his horse to a tree and moved forward silently, toward the voices. As Crow moved through the wooded area, he began to smell the men and horses mixed with the wood smoke. Two men in gray uniforms leaned on their rifles, quietly talking. Crow moved to their left and then closer to their camp. A quick count estimated there were seventy-five to a hundred men. Crow moved
