A week later, as troopers lined up to be interviewed to join the scouts, Major Adams fumed. Each of the hopeful troopers entered the tent set up for the interviews, one at a time. Some stayed inside for a couple of minutes while others were there for fifteen minutes or more. A list of those chosen would be posted the next day. Adams watched a moment longer and then walked back to his tent. As Adams approached his tent, an officer stepped out, “Oh, Major Adams, this message arrived for you.”
As soon as Adams saw the stationary, he knew it was from Kenna Mary Collier. Taking the note, Adams entered his tent and sat down in a rocking chair. Breaking the wax seal he read,
“My dearest,
I will be unable to go with you to supper this evening, I am experiencing the vapors. Perhaps tomorrow?
