The Wolf Pack had been on the move for three days. A river was on their right, and a dense forest on their left. Crow spotted an area where the trees came close to the river, “1st Sergeant Stump, have the men set up a cold-camp yonder where the trees meet the river. We"ll have cover and water for the horses and men.”
The cold-camp (no fires) was made ready as some of the men watered and cared for the horses. Two, two-man scout teams were sent out to check the area ahead. After the men had settled in for the night, there came the sound of hounds in the distance. Crow stood and listened. He said to Stump, “They"re a mile or more away; could be hunters or maybe a slave patrol. Either way, we don"t want them finding us.”
Stump stood up, and then he said in a whisper, “Someone is at the river
