At three in the morning, Crow"s men began their slow, methodical crawl into the Rebel camp. On the edge of the camp, men silently untied and took the six workhorses used to haul the Reb"s supply wagon. One of the camp guards had his throat slit and then was sat down with his back to a tree, as if he were asleep. Just before daybreak, all of the Wolf Pack had returned to their camp and waited. As the sun began to climb up into the sky, a cry of alarm went up in the Rebel camp. First one man and then another found that the man next to him had been killed. The officer in charge stood in the middle of the camp calling for a report. Two lieutenants rushed up but two shots echoed through the morning air, and the lieutenants fell dead.
