By December of 1864, Washington DC"s population had grown to nearly 80,000 and had become the most fortified city in the world. With its 37 miles of protective lines, sixty-eight forts and 1500 guns and mortars, there was little fear of another attack by the Confederate Army.
A worried President Lincoln had heard nothing from General Sherman in weeks. Then on December 21st he received a ten word telegram from Sherman, "I beg to present you as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah."
