Crow and his men had been in Missouri just a few days and were passing a small town. From the town came the sound of church bells and a steam whistle. Crow turned to McCauley, “You and Barley ride in there and find out what has happened.” As the two men rode away at a gallop, the bells continued to ring. A short time later, Barley and McCauley returned riding hard. They pulled up short when they arrived. “It"s the president! Lincoln has been shot!” said Barley, as tears rolled down his cheeks. “Someone has killed Lincoln.” The mood of the men changed with the news. Crow just turned his mount and began heading west.
