Crow and his men left camp before dawn. Fort Kearny was a six-day ride if they didn"t push it. Three miles west of Kearny was Dobytown, their destination. Crow, Tala and Earl rode together. Tala said, “The Cheyenne and the Sioux have been attacking the wagon trains and Fort Kearny this last year. Kearny has been reinforced by the First Nebraska Cavalry and the Seventh Iowa Cavalry. They"ve been providing escorts for the wagon trains. Kearny is a rest stop and a place to replenish supplies. But most of the trains head for Dobytown where they can also resupply.”
Earl asked, “Why Dobytown, if its three miles further?”
“w****s and whiskey,” replied Tala with a grin. “Gambling too.”
