Chapter 60

302 Words

The sun was setting. The evening air smelled of wood smoke and roasting beef. Children laughed and played chase; knowing they were in a safe place. Voices of the emigrants mixed with sounds of contented livestock. Kenna, using a short metal pole with a hook on the end, pulled a Dutch oven from the cook-fire. With the hook, she removed the lid. Immediately, the aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air. “Smells good,” said a voice from behind her. Kenna turned to find Crow dismounting. As he walked toward her, Kenna thought, "I think I have feelings for this man. I wish he was going to California with me." Crow tied the reins of his horse to the back of the wagon and then joined Kenna. “I smell beef cooking,” said Crow. “It"s the first time in months that we could eat in a safe place.
