Crow led the others into the Las Vegas valley. As they traveled, the desert began to fade. Then green grass began to spread out before them. An hour later they saw the old Mormon fort. There were several wagons and horses. Several men could be seen tending to the animals. Fields of crops surrounded the fort and were watered by three natural springs. Crow and the others entered the adobe brick fort and stopped in front of a building where several men stood on the porch smoking. Crow asked, “Can you tell us where we can find Mr. Gass?” Pointing with his pipe, one man said, “He"s inside.” “Earl,” said Crow, “wait here.
