McCauley reached out and opened the door of the Mineral Assay Office and went in followed by the others. The assayer, Robert White looked up when five armed men stepped into his building. White moved to the counter where on a shelf, out of sight, was a short-barrel twelve gauge shotgun. “How can I help you gentlemen?” asked White.
Barley replied, “We saw your sign out front about wanting guards. Are you hiring?”
“Are you from around here?”
“No sir, we just rode in. We are looking for work. We were in the cavalry together, just arrived from Washington.”
White asked, “Do you have anyone to vouch for you?”
Barley said, “We rode in with two others, Jedadiah Crow and Earl Stump. They are both down the street reporting to the Marshal"s office. We don"t know anyone else her
