Lydia exclaimed, "I'm sure he'll be there, Mama," with excitement. "I'll be the one dancing, too." with him initially!" Despite her smile, Mrs. Smith scolded, "You'll do no such thing." Even the normally quiet Jane started laughing along with the other girls. Lydia added, "Or Lizzy. Or me! " Mr. Smith grinned and went back to his book, happy with the drama he had stirred and content that he had fulfilled his obligations on his own terms.
