The bass from the music boomed through the mansion before the girls even stepped inside. The Midnight Gala was already in full swing. Crystal chandeliers spilled warm light across polished marble floors, while laughter, music, and the clink of glasses all blended into one elegant hum. Students from every corner of campus filled the room, dressed in sharp suits and glittering gowns. The moment the doors opened, a few conversations paused. Not because people meant to stare. But because Olivia and Louisa had arrived. Olivia entered first. Dark waves cascaded over her shoulders, framing an elegant oval face and porcelain skin that glowed beneath the chandeliers. Tall and long-legged, she carried herself with quiet confidence, every step measured, every expression composed. There was an effortless sophistication about her that made even the simplest black dress look expensive. She wasn’t trying to command attention. She simply did. Beside her walked Louisa. Her chestnut-brown curls tumbled in soft waves around her shoulders, framing a warm caramel complexion and bright hazel eyes that usually sparkled with mischief. Her curvy figure was wrapped in an emerald-green dress that suited her perfectly, and although the smile on her lips wasn’t quite as radiant as it usually was, she still carried the warmth that drew people toward her. Before either of them could take another step
“There she is!”
A familiar voice rose above the music. Dimitri Laurent excused himself from the group surrounding him and strode toward them with his signature grin.
“Sunshine.” Olivia’s eyes rolled automatically.
“You really need a new greeting.” “And ruin a perfectly good tradition?”
She stepped forward anyway, slipping one arm around his shoulders before placing a quick kiss on his cheek. Dimitri smiled. “I’ve missed you too.”
He turned toward Louisa, opening his arms.
“And my favorite troublemaker.”
Louisa laughed for what felt like the first time all day before wrapping him in a hug. Olivia folded her arms. “Please don’t encourage her.” Dimitri shrugged innocently.
“Someone has to.” Louisa laughed again, nudging him lightly.
“You two are impossible.” “And yet,” Dimitri said dramatically, looking between them,
“my two favorite women on campus have finally decided to grace my party with their presence.”
The small group behind him whistled and laughed. Olivia ignored every one of them.
“I’m getting a drink.” Without waiting for an answer, she disappeared into the crowd. Louisa smiled.
“I’ll leave you to your admirers.” She motioned toward the students already trying to reclaim Dimitri’s attention.
“My condolences.” Dimitri sighed dramatically. “I suffer greatly.”
Louisa laughed, shaking her head before wandering into the sea of guests. Across the ballroom… A pair of familiar eyes followed her every step. Julian Sterling stood near the shadows beside the staircase, untouched drink in hand. He watched her smile politely at strangers. He noticed how often that smile faded the moment she thought no one was looking. His grip tightened around the glass. She was trying. Trying far harder than she should have had to. For one reckless second… He almost crossed the room. Almost told her none of this mattered. Almost asked if they could leave together. Instead… He looked away. Not tonight. It had to end tonight. A loud voice suddenly cut through the music.
“Ladies and gentlemen!” “The king of parties has arrived!”
Heads turned. Ethan marched into the ballroom with both arms spread wide as if he’d just conquered a kingdom. Several students burst into laughter. Someone threw a cocktail napkin at him.
“You’re late!” “I wanted to make an entrance!” Ethan declared. Walking a few steps behind him, Darren could only shake his head. “You know,” he muttered, “most people just walk through the door.”
“And miss all this?” Ethan gestured proudly toward the laughing crowd. “Never.”
Darren rolled his eyes, though a reluctant smile tugged at his lips. As they crossed the room toward the other football players, Olivia happened to glance up from the bar. Her gaze landed on Darren. Then shifted to Ethan. A small crease formed between her brows. So that’s who he hangs around with. She turned back to her drink without another thought. Across the room… Julian finally tore his eyes away from Louisa. He slipped quietly toward the balcony doors. He needed air. Or maybe… He just needed the courage to do what he’d come here to do

Louisa drifted through the ballroom with a polite smile, exchanging greetings she barely registered. Music echoed through the hall. Laughter rose from every corner. Yet none of it reached her. Her eyes kept searching. Then she found him. Julian stood alone near the balcony doors, one hand wrapped around a glass he hadn't drunk from. For a heartbeat, their eyes met. Something flickered across his face. Regret. Then he turned and stepped onto the balcony. Louisa's heart lifted. Finally. Without a second thought, she followed him. The cool night air wrapped around her as she stepped outside. Julian stood with his back to her, overlooking the campus lights below.
"I was beginning to think you were avoiding me," she said with a small laugh. No answer. She walked closer.
"I know this morning was..." She smiled awkwardly.
"...not exactly our finest conversation." Still nothing. She stopped beside him.
"At some point, you're going to have to tell me what's going on." Silence.
She reached out, resting a gentle hand against his arm.
"Babe..." Julian stepped away. The movement was small. But it felt enormous. Her hand fell to her side.
"...Julian?" He kept his eyes on the darkness beyond the railing.
"There isn't an easy way to say this." Her smile disappeared.
"I think..." He swallowed. "We should end this." Louisa blinked.
"What?" She shook her head immediately.
"No, don't say that." "You've said things like that before." "I don't like those jokes." "They're not funny."
"They're not jokes."
The words landed like stones. Her eyes filled.
"What did I do?" "You have to tell me." "If you're angry, we'll fix it." "If I messed up, I'll apologize." "Just..." Her voice broke. "...don't do this."
Julian closed his eyes. "It's not you." "Stop saying that."
She stepped closer again. "If it isn't me, then what is it?"
He opened his mouth. For one impossible second, it looked as though he might finally tell her. Instead...
He looked away. "I can't."
Tears spilled freely down her cheeks. "I don't care what you're going through." "I'll stay." "We'll figure it out together."
He finally looked at her.
His expression shattered what was left of her hope. "I'm trying to protect you."
"From what?" He didn't answer. She grabbed his hand. "I don't care what it is..." "I just want you." His fingers tightened around hers...Then gently slipped away. "I'm sorry."
Without another word, Julian walked back into the party. Louisa stood frozen until the sound of the balcony door closing reached her. Then her knees gave way. She slid to the floor, leaning against the railing as quiet sobs escaped into the night.
