Collission Course

Darren had come back to Crestmont Stadium when the party was over. The cheers that had filled the stadium were long gone, replaced by the quiet evening breeze and the distant chirping of birds. The field was empty and silent, the way Darren liked it. He tossed his backpack down, dropped the ball on the grass, and got to work. He dribbled, shot, retrieved the ball and started again. Again. And again. Time slipped away as he repeated the same drills, ignoring the ache in his legs and the sweat dripping into his eyes. You're not good enough, he heard his father's voice ring out in his mind. He gritted his teeth and struck the ball harder. You'll never be the best. Another shot. The ball slammed into the back of the net. It wasn't enough. One good shot wouldn't erase six months on the bench. It wouldn't change Coach Reynolds' mind. It wouldn't silence the words that had followed him since he was a little boy. So he kept going. By the time he finally stopped, every muscle in his body was screaming at him. He collapsed onto the grass, gasping for air as he stared up at the sky that was slowly turning from blue to shades of orange. For the first time that day, he allowed himself to rest. His mind wandered back to the home game. Not the winning goal. Not the cheering crowd. The girl. The cheerleader who had been the center of Blue Blaze's performance. She was impossible to ignore. But strangely, it wasn't her performance he remembered. It was what happened afterwards. While the rest of the squad celebrated with the football team, she had quietly walked away. No pictures. No laughter. No excitement. As though she couldn't wait to leave. It was... strange. For someone everyone admired, she had looked like she wanted to disappear. Darren frowned. He didn't even know her name. And whatever reason she had for leaving wasn't his business. With a small shake of his head, he pushed the thought aside. Football. That was all he needed to think about. Tomorrow was another training session. Another chance to prove himself. Another chance to show Coach Reynolds that he deserved more than a place on the bench. He sat up, picked up the ball and slung his backpack over his shoulder. "I'll prove you wrong," he muttered, though he wasn't sure whether he was talking to his father... or to himself. Without another glance at the empty field, Darren walked toward the stadium exit. Tomorrow couldn't come soon enough **************************************************** The whistle blew. Loud and clear. “Again!” Coach Reynolds yelled. The Titans groaned, then took off. Darren gritted his teeth and ran harder. Every lap, every drill, every bead of sweat brought him closer to where he wanted to be. The starting lineup. “Coach Reynolds is gonna kill us one of these days,” a senior player muttered. “If I don’t make it, tell my mom I died chasing a football,” another said. The other players laughed. Darren smiled. The whistle blew again. “That’s enough! Hit the showers.” The Titans shuffled off the field, grumbling about the brutal session. Darren stayed behind. He always did. While everyone else left, he walked across the field, picking up training cones and stray footballs. Nobody had asked him to. It had just become a habit. He stacked the last cone under one arm and bent to pick up the equipment bag. Music wafted from the stadium. He glanced toward the other end of the field. The cheerleaders had arrived. They stretched together, laughing and joking as they prepared for practice. Then… He saw her. The same girl from yesterday. She stood near the center of the group, talking to another cheerleader. For a second, her mouth curled. It wasn’t much. Just a small smile. Then it was gone. So… The Ice Queen could smile after all. Darren quickly looked away and grabbed the equipment bag. A football slipped from it. It bounced once. Then twice. Before gathering speed across the grass. Darren froze. The ball wasn’t rolling toward the squad. It was rolling straight toward her. She took a step back into position, her eyes locked on her coach. The ball was coming from behind. She never saw it. Darren’s eyes widened. “Hey!”
